5 Stars Great chair!
Love this product, it was easy to assemble, doesn’t take up too much space (about same size/slightly smaller than standard office chair) it’s sturdy and great for exercising. Came with a handy booklet on exercises you can do using the chair.

5 Stars Gaiam Balance Ball Chair
I purchased this chair for my home office. I love it so much, I am considering purchasing one for my work office. One suggestion, make sure you FULLY inflat the balance ball; it will make a difference in how you sit.

2 Stars Small
If you see the girl in the Picture at the desk it looks nice but, to a normal desk your seting on the ground and your head is all thats over top the desk, so if you like type with your hands over your head its fine.

4 Stars Good, but short.
I’m 5′9″ and found this to be too short for me. Fotunately, I already had a larger exercise ball that I used instead of the ball that came with the chair — this works.

I do think it’s overpriced.

2 Stars Gaiam Balance Ball Chair
I had been sitting on a yoga ball for the last 6 months but I really wanted to order the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair. After sitting just on the yoga ball, the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair did not work as good. I would recommend just getting the ball and skipping the chair.

TESTIMONAL:
Love this chair! Date: December 29, 2008

“I bought the chair to use at work to help with balance. WOW! I love it!! Helps not only my balance but my posture by forcing me to sit up straight. Both my job-share co-worker and I think it is the best chair ever! Only problem was getting my husband to give it back so I could actually bring it into the office. He borrowed it to “try” in his home office and had a hard time giving it up. I told him to order his own;)” - Nonnie, Reedsburg, WI.

5 Stars balacne ball chair
glad I finally gave in and bought this. really helping my posture and my back. you do need to move between this and an office chair for a while in order to get use to it but that takes maybe a week.

5 Stars I LOVE this chair
I love this chair! I’ve tried others ranging from as much as $800 and this ball chair is the only one that keeps my neck, shoulders and back happy. I Got this to help with my posture while sitting at the computer all day–love it!! Helps tilt your pelvis so your spine stacks over the pelvis instead of all slumpy. I feel more alert when sitting up straight, and can lift my collarbones and move shoulders back and feel even better!

3 Stars Purchased directly from Gaiam
I purchased this balance ball chair (black base with sage ball) directly from Gaiam and I’m pleased with it so far.

The chair is not height adjustable so if you are over 6″ (according to the manufacturer) you might find this chair a little low for you. I am 5′2″ and my desk is a little tall but this chair was perfect for me. Co-workers have tried it out ranging from me height over 6″ and although they all think it’s “weird” but “comfortable” they haven’t tried it at their desks so I can’t really comment on the height recommendation.

The chair needs to be assembled when you get it. You will have a back, a base, four legs, a couple hand tightened screws, a couple wrench tightened screws, a deflated ball, a ball pump, a metal rod that pops in to hold the ball in place and a wrench in your box.

Pumping up the ball took the longest but the chair assembly took maybe 6 minutes and it’s solid when put together and extremely light weight as it’s made of hollow molded plastic.

Two of the wheels have locks on them and the wheels simply pop into the base. You don’t need to be a mechanic to put this thing together.

When assembled I found that you can lock the wheels with your feet easily which was a plus so you don’t have to bend over to unlock and lock the wheels if you need to roll around.

The ball is comfortable and it holds the heat from the space heater under my desk… which was a nice perk! :)

Depending on how you sit on this thing the back rest is not comfortable. It would have been nice if Gaiam had a thin pad on the backrest as it’s hard plastic but overall it’s not that big of a deal if you are sitting up straight and not resting your weight on the back rest.

The chair also comes with a small booklet of exercises.

About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won’t strain sensitive joints.

5 Stars Good stuff
Works very well. I did buy and use the white lithium grease as others suggested. Squeaked at first. So I just put more of that grease in the handle joints and it fixed it right up.

5 Stars using it for more than a year
Bought it via amazon.com and I am using it for the past 1 year.. Good product.

4 Stars Great for Us
SETTING

My boyfriend and I share the Elliptical Trainer, which we have endearingly renamed simply, “The Machine.” We live in a two bedroom apartment, and have The Machine setup in the spare bedroom with our computers/office stuff. Being in a second floor apartment we are concerned about the noise pollution we cause to our neighbors below. They claim that they can hear The Machine in use when there’s not other noise in the room. A casual conversation or hum of a fan easily overcomes the sound.

CONS

It was hard to put together. The instructions were fine, but it can take multiple sets of hands to really get it together at some steps. I would like it if you could set up a profile with your information so that you could toggle more quickly between weights/settings for different users, but this is a minor thing to me. The screen can be hard to see in dimlight, but this is also a minor issue.

PROS

The Machine seems very solid, does not squeak (we’ve only had it a couple of weeks and did add some lithium grease to moving parts during construction), and has a smooth motion to it. I am 5′6″ and my boyfriend is 6′1″; we both use The Machine with no problems. It is easy to move around and doesn’t take up all that much space. It’s quiet to use as well.

I like that there are multiple programs, settings, and levels to choose from. You can workout for a specific amount of time or set a calorie goal and go for that instead. The User’s Manual has a lot of good information on it beyond just use of The Machine. There are also healthy lifestyle and eating tips.

OVERVIEW

I would definitely recommend The Machine to friends looking for an Elliptical Trainer. For the price (and free shipping from Amazon) it’s a great deal on a well built piece of equipment. Now to go burn off a few more calories with it…

4 Stars Love my Schwinn 430 Elliptical!
I meant to give this product 5 stars but missed the 5th somehow. My daughter and I put the 430 Elliptical together in nothing flat. I have one problem with a bolt fitting into a leg piece but am working with Schwinn to get a new part. Their customer service is top notch.

This unit is a very smooth ride. Even my husband starting using it and lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks. I would highly recommend this elliptical for home use.

5 Stars Great price for a good workout
After much research it was decided that this was to be the birthday present for my wife (no, I wasn’t sending her a message, she asked for one.)

I’m no exercise guru but this elliptical feels right. It is sturdy, smooth, and fairly compact. The size was important as it is in our bedroom. It fits nicely in a previously open area, and isn’t an eye sore.

Assembly was just under 2 hours with both of us. Instructions were excellent, and my biggest complaint is that Schwinn provided no spare parts, so I ended up 1 washer short somehow. No big deal.

My only other complaint is that the electrical cord is really short, so it barely reaches the outlet - that was some poor planning.

Completely satisfied with the purchase and I’d recommend to anyone searching for a fair priced elliptical that should last quite a long time.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great value for the price
It takes a little bit of time (5-10 min) to find the best position for the magnet-sensor pair, but that’s about it. Easy installation, large and clear display. Input of parameters is simple.

For it’s price, it is definitely best buy. And for most people, it will also be more then enough in terms of functionality.

4 Stars Great Value, Does the Job I need.
I bought one of these for one of my bikes because I didn’t want to spend a lot on a computer until I figured out better what features I wanted and did a little more research.

The computer’s controls are not the easiest to use but after figuring it out, it works fine. I found the main features I use and need are; 1. Current Speed, 2. Trip Distance, 3.Moving Time, 4. Average Speed and 5. Time of Day. All these features work great and get the job done. It’s worked so well for me and I found I didn’t really need additional features so I bought 2 more of these for my other Family Bikes.

Pros:

- Good Value

- Seems Accurate

- Tracks Moving Time (i.e. it stops timer when stationary for a few seconds)

Cons:

- Can be a little hard to read in some light conditions.

- Sensor may need a little fine tuning to get the spacing correct.

- Controls and instructions are not the greatest

5 Stars Works great!
pd = f

p = 3.1416 (pi)

d = diameter of tire in millimeters

f = wheel factor

I was a little confused at first, but after fiddling around with it for awhile, and reading what others have said about it here, I finally got it setup right, and it works great. Like others have already said, you need to get the proper wheel factor entered. You can figure out the wheel factor with the above formula, or just measure the circumference of your tire and convert that to millimeters to get the wheel factor.

4 Stars 2000 miles and counting
I’ve been using this computer for over 2000 miles and it’s still working great. I can’t believe a cheap thing like this has lasted so long and I haven’t even changed the battery yet. It’s a good product.

5 Stars Terriffic Gadget — Weak Installation Instructions
I have only used this thing for a day, so I can’t speak for the long term.

Installation is not difficult once you understand what to do. The instructions are poor. For example, instructions for mounting the bracket to the handle bars say, “Using a Philips screwdriver attach the mounting bracket to the right side of the handlebar.” This was the first sentence in the first task I tried to do. There are NO screws at all! The bracket is attached with cable ties. And, I can see absolutely no reason it has to be on the right side of the handlebar. As you can see from the pictures I posted, my bike has a reflector attached to the right, so I had to put it on the left. In short, everything in the first sentence of the first instruction I tried is wrong.

They tell you to install the sensor and magnet first. I feel strongly this is a mistake. I think you should install the handlebar bracket first. This makes it easier to route the cable, position it and wind up the extra slack.

The sensor goes on the inside of the right fork - facing the spokes. You may be able to mount it on the left fork, but the easiest way to route the sensor cable is to wrap it around the brake cable which (at least on my bike) is on the right side.

The magnet clamps to a spoke immediately beside the sensor. The fork is vertical but the spokes are not — they’re angled. So, you cannot mount the magnet parallel to the sensor. Getting the two parts to align and not strike requires you move the sensor up and down the spoke until the two parts are close without touching - see my close-up picture of these two parts installed.

When I first installed it I though it wasn’t working because I would move the wheel and no speed appeared. I discovered there’s a brief delay before the speed appears so you need to have a little patience. I agree with the review that says you should test the device by moving the magnet near the sensor before beginning installation. This give you confidence it’s working if you have trouble getting the parts aligned good enough.

Setting up the meter for the first time was a little confusing. When you initially turn it on it steps you through a procedure to input the various setup data. You have to reset everything to change any of these settings, so get the numbers you need together before you start, or step through without entering anything so you know what will be needed. You probably know everything except the wheel circumference in millimeters (millimeters? — let’s get a rough number in fine detail). If you know your wheel and tire size (which is on the tire) you can get the number from a table in the instructions. Other reviewers have made a big thing of measuring your rolling distance to do this. I didn’t do it, and I can’t see why it’s necessary. If you miss the value by the maximum amount possible on the chart for a given wheel size it can’t be off more than 1mph when going 20mph (or a distance of 1 mile in 20), and if you use the correct number from the chart it’ll be a lot more accurate. Now, if the numbers in the table are wrong that’s another thing. Maybe somebody who’s compared his measured results with the table for his tire will post the difference and how much error that would cause in 20 miles. But remember, this $10 gadget isn’t intended to be used by the national bureau of standards.

Once installed and setup it works great. I like the current speed, the average speed, the distance traveled, and time peddling (it stops the clock when you stop moving). The meter snaps in and out of the mounting bracket easily. As someone said, you don’t have to reset everything to reset your trip data. Toggle to the DST (distance traveled) display and hold down the left button for a few seconds. This will reset the distance traveled, the trip timer and the average speed. The odometer accumulates total distance traveled since the last master reset.

The magnet isn’t held in place very tight and I wonder if it will tend to move, but not so far in about an hour’s riding.

I can’t see how you can beat this gadget for the price.

PROS: Works great.

CONS: Installation instructions weak.

Edited 10 hours later to add:

I can now speak to long term reliability. It failed since I wrote my review 10 hours ago, and 24 hours since I installed it. It’s not the battery, because if you press one of the buttons the display lights up and the button functions work properly. It has to be the sensor signal not working, and I’ve seen similar complaints in these reviews. Oh well, it was great for the one hour of use I got.

NOTE: Rating is now based on how it worked yesterday.
