5 Stars Terrific Tarp
Great design&liteweight make this tarp perfect for solo trekkers who need a sturdy&lrg sq ft. The Nite Ize cord clips work great,I even bought an extra set.Just be sure to always keep the tarp well secured to prevent leaks from pooled water, and exessive flapping which can lead to damage and a wet nite in the wilds!

4 Stars Nice tarp for ultralight backpackers; Not so spacious, though
Got this tarp for my 30th birthday and took it out the next weekend to use for an overnighter on the Uwharrie Trail. For a single person overnight, this tarp is awesome. With four stakes, four guy ropes, and no poles, this thing weighs next to nothing and fits anywhere in or on my backpack. I didn’t set it up as pictured; instead, I staked three corners to the ground to form a triangle, and used my trek pole to hold up the fourth corner. This worked well because I oriented the sides staked to the ground so that the open end was out of the wind. There are numerous guy points all over the tarp. Since I had only used one rope for the initial setup, I attached two more along the middle axis of the tarp and then tied them to a tree to give me a little more space inside.

A word to the wise, though: Kelty has some illustrations showing how you can fit a BUNCH of people under this tarp. I tried setting the tarp up several different ways in my back yard, and I think that more than two people might feel a little crowded with any configuration.

Kelty Grand Mesa 6 Person Tent Ruby Tan

Blending affordability with versatility, the Kelty Grand Mesa is a great choice for packing on your trail excursions. This freestanding tent sleeps up to six campers, offers three-season usage, and includes a single vestibule for storage. Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it’s wise to choose a tent that’s designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you’ll face. For instance, if you’re a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick–especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you’re a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you’ll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you’d like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you’re a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don’t need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it’s easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It’s also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you’re considering.

5 Stars Fantastic large ten
Bought this for family campouts and it was wonderful. Took about 20 min the first time to set up but now I’m down to 10 minutes including putting on the rain guard. If no rain guard then its a 5 minute set up. Without rain guard, tent is very breezy so its wonderful on hot nights. Its a lot warmer with the rainguard on. Strongly recommend this tent for family of 4-5 camping. Ample room! Enjoy

5 Stars Kelty Mesa 6 thoughts
We bought this tent for our family of 5 and it has been great. It has a large vestibule and is very quick and easy to set up. The tent is lightweight and the aluminum poles are light and strong.

4 Stars Only One Gripe
Nice tent, good quality, easy to set up and actually fits back into its stuff sack. My only gripe is the tent should have stake grommets or loops mid point at the bottom of both sides and perhaps the back (where the side and rear panels are seamed with the floor). With stakes only at each of the four corners, the side and rear panels sag a bit, and the floor is not tight. The easiest way to explain it is: Imagine yourself IN the tent - you can reach down at the seam between the floor and side or rear panels and literally pull the fabric in about a foot. This makes for a non-tight floor. Fortunately, I knew about Sierra tent guyout clips, and with those the tent is close to perfect. Minor gripe, I suppose, but a few pennies for three stake loops (each side and the back) would have been a good design idea.

5 Stars Why I chose this tent
I haven’t had a chance to use it. I bought it for two reasons: 1. The quality of Kelty products. I have own Kelty tents and backpacks that have lasted several years; 2. I wanted a tent with a full rain fly, one in which I could stand up and with room for a small table, lantern and air mattress. After 30 years of backpacking and camping, I finally got tired of crawling in and out of small tents.

5 Stars It’s a keeper
Add me to the 5 star list. First run was for backpacking weekend, we love it. 4 inner pockets, top loop for flashlight/small lantern. Easily to set up & easy to pack up!

No insects came in, no rain problems, no condensation inside, no complaints here.

5 Stars Great compact tent
My husband and I purchased this tent and we really like it. It is light enough for back backing. It says it can fit four people but I would say 2 comfortably and 3 snug. It is really easy to set, it takes about 5 minutes.

5 Stars Research paid off
A few days of reading reviews on 3 season, 3-4 person tents led me to the Kelty Grand Mesa 4. After having received it today, I couldn’t be happier. The most important factors for me were durability, lightweight construction and ease of set up. Though I haven’t had the opportunity to test it outside, I was able to set it up indoors alone very easily and in well under ten minutes. It was equally easy to break down and put away. It is incredibly roomy inside for weighing only about seven pounds. Can’t wait to break it out in the great outdoors!

3 Stars Nice Tent for the price - But…
I do not recommend this tent for camping anyplace where you might encounter blowing sand or dust. Unlike many dome tents, the mesh windows in this tent are NOT equipped with zip-up panels - so there is no way to “batten down the hatches” and keep the dust out during a blow. Kelty probably decided to go this route to keep weight down, and to cut manufacturing costs enabling them to keep the tent priced low.

Stowed, the tent is light and compact. It is a joy to set up and take down - very quick and easy, and it feels spacious and airy even when the rain-fly is in place. I also like the large entry port - I don’t have to crawl to get in or out like I do with some dome tents. It’ll keep you dry and keep the bugs out, but the lack of a way to seal the mesh windows render it of limited use for someone like me who likes to camp in the desert sometimes.

5 Stars GREAT TENT
I live in Aspen/Snowmass and go camping a lot. For two people… it’s AWESOME! For 3 people it’s great… even with gear. You can forget about 4 people… but isn’t that why you buy a 4 person tent… to sleep 3 comfortable:-)?

Anyway… super easy assembly. I recommend putting a tarp underneath the tent to keep it in good condition and keep it dry.

Holds up in wind… rain… etc. The rain fly is great and gives you that extra space you need.

No complaints… great buy, super easy to set up, holds up in the weather.

For around $150… it’s the best buy around.

Oh… this is not a winter tent… 3 seasons only.

5 Stars Great product
This is the first bicycle trailer that I have purchased so I don’t have much for comparison. However, I do need to say that this product exceeds every expectation that I had. The trailer is very solid and its a true joy to be able to share the biking experience with my son.

5 Stars First trailer, great choice
I don’t have anything to compare this trailer to as it is my first purchase for one, but I have to comment on how light it is despite how large it seems. My niece (age 6) and nephew (age 2) fit very comfortably in it. The screen is nearly panoramic and gives the kids a nice view. Would recommend to anyone!

4 Stars Best value I could find, and surprisingly good
We already had a BOB Dualie double stroller when I found myself wishing I had looked for a bike trailer that could double as a stroller. I researched all the major brands.. Chariot, Burley, Croozer, and this one just seemed to be the right balance of price and quality. I have not been disappointed. The rear wheels are bigger than my BOB and the front wheel is a nice, solid size - about the same as the BOB. That makes for a good stroller - we love the BOB, but this rates right up there.

I have not complaints on the quality of build, although I do wish it were aluminum or composite - it appears to be steel, and slightly heavier than it should be. But I don’t really notice it - the wheels make it a breeze to tow or push.

The accordion-style bug guard is a genius design - no zipping in and out every time like the other trailers. It just clasps at the bottom and lifts up when you’re done. The kids love it.

The seat is great - nicely padded, not flimsy sling-style.

The tow bar is easy to attach, and the hitch was a snap to mount, especially if you have a quick-release axle.

Reasons for it not being 5 stars:

- no sun screen unless you use the weather guard, which is plastic and inhibits ventilation. i may have to jerry-rig something.

- I would like to have a divider between the kiddos like the Croozer. however, the shoulder straps adjust nicely to having a single kiddo in the seat, where they can sit in the center. Impressive design there

- the stroller won’t fit through an average single-door like my BOB does. Fortunately, it’s easy to take off a wheel.

- It needs a better place to store the strolling wheel - I’d rather not take up space in the cargo pocket.. AND it needs more cargo space as well.

Aside from those things… perfect. Especially since it is literally half the price of the Burley and Chariot, when they are outfitted for both bike and strolling/jogging. If I had bought a Chariot, I would have tried to sell my BOB to help fund it. With this one, I may not even have to do that, keeping them both.

5 Stars Absolutely love it and very much worth the money!
I spent many weeks researching MANY bike trailers and I am ever so happy with this decision/purchase! I have a 2 1/2 yr old and 11 month old and live in an area with no sidewalks, but many beautiful state/county parks, so I wanted a trailer that was both comfortable for the boys and safe! I didn’t like the other trailers because they offered a sling-type seat. This Schwinn offers a regular seat (with removable cushion for easy washing!) and a lap seatbelt with optional shoulder harness! I love the bug shield because it not only keeps the Maryland Mosquitoes out, but also any debris that my rear bike tire kicks up (including mud!) I have biked on main roads, grass/dirt/gravel roads and muddy wooded trails with absolutely no problem!

The only thing about this trailer that I did not like too much was the removable handle bar compartment. It kept falling off and while using the trailer as a stroller in Disney last week, the compartment actually broke off… so I will need to rig-up a new camera/water bottle holder!

We received MANY compliments in Disney and Williamsburg when rolling this ‘limo of a stroller’ around the parks! Just a side note… this stroller does not fit through the front gate in The Magic Kingdom, however the side tire pops off with no problem for a quick and easy entry! I would highly recommend this to anyone!

4 Stars Very well built
My husband kept on commenting how well the buggy is built. The only negative thing about it is that some of the safety clips are so very hard to manipulate. My fingers are just not strong enough. Even my husband has to exert quite some strength and power to open and close the clips.

But it rides beautifully, and not heavy at all. A little bit of sand does manage to get through the screen when riding on the bike path here at Trap Pond State Park in Delaware. But the bugs stay out which is wonderful for our little passenger. We hope to use the buggy for many, many years to come!!
