Victorinox Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars excellent product
Had one for twenty years and finally wore out. Bought this one because it is exactly the same as the old one I had. I go with the quality of Victorinox, and not some other knockoff brands which I have owned and always regretted buying.

5 Stars Knife order
I received what I ordered in a reasonable time and it was in perfect condition. I’m very satisfied.

5 Stars Great little knife
I bought 30 of these to give as Xmas presents last year. People loved them. They are so useful. Lots of good tools in a smallish knife.

5 Stars Simply perfect
I bought this knife over five years ago and carry everyday - It has every thing you need and it’s not too bulky in your pocket or bag. In fact, I love the knife so much I ended up buying ten more for all the guys (and one hardcore gal) in my wedding! Amazon got all 10 of them to me in a matter of a few days.

5 Stars Best utility knife you can buy
This is the real deal. Essentially unbrekable and very compact. A couple of useless tools though.

5 Stars Best little knife
The small Swiss Army knife is the best I have found for the price. Over the past few years, I have bought a dozen or more as gifts. Great pattern and color too.

5 Stars Love this knife…
This little knife is awsome, I have it in the pink and it is so cute. You’ll wonder what you ever did without it! Scissors and nail file are my favorite parts.

5 Stars A very useful mini pocketknife your boys will NEVER borrow :)
I’ve had about 8 of these mini-pocketknives in red and black over the last few years, and each time they are “borrowed” by one or more of my 3 boys. No matter where I hide them, they find them, and then lose them. I then decided to order the green and blue version of these, and I still have them 2 years later! Somehow the boys just manage to leave these particular knives alone…wayyyyy too girly for them I guess.

The knife is very useful, and my friends and my sons’ friends are always amazed when I pull it out from my purse to cut an apple, take out a splinter, snip a plastic piece from a toy, sand down a sharp fingernail, etc. And I don’t feel like some kind of knife-wielding freak when I use it because it’s so cute.

I have bought several of them as gifts for friends and they love them too!

5 Stars Great little pocket knife
Nothing fancy about it, just your standard girly knife. The pattern and colors are cute though. My daughter and niece are enjoying their’s and they certainly come in handy.

5 Stars MUST HAVE
My friend’s dad had bought one of these for me when I vacationed with them. From that point on, I was in love with it. I had never seen one like it until I found this one on Amazon for an awesome price. I have the pink one and I got my mom the green one for Christmas. It has everything! My personal favorites are the tweezers and little scissors! You’ll be surprised at how often you’ll find yourself using it!

5 Stars Light medium-sized multi-tool with extreme quality
I own Leatherman multi-tools including the new Wave, Pulse, Juice S2, Skeletool CX, Micra, Squirt S4, and Squirt P4. I also own about 20 Victorinox Swiss Army Knives ranging from nearly all the recent Alox models and many cellidor models including the old Champion, Swiss Champ, Swiss Champ XLT, and Cybertool 41. I also own a normal stainless steel Spirit in addition to this newly acquired black oxide model. After owning all of these types of pocket knives and multi-tools, I can say that Victorinox makes the highest quality, highest consistency multi-tools and pocket knives. (Don’t get me wrong, I like Leatherman a lot as they make well-designed tools, too. But the consistency is lacking with Leatherman when compared to Victorinox.)

The Vic Spirit in black oxide is identical to the regular Vic Spirit. Its main strengths include:

All locking tools

Access to tools with the pliers in the closed position

Presence of scissors (which distinguishes it from the Spirit “S” model)

Reputation of extremely good corrosion resistance

Chisel (which is unsual in any multitool)

Extremely good wood saw (better than Leatherman)

Very light weight for its size (only 5.5 oz)

Nice nylon case (Nylon comes with Black Oxide edition vs Leather for regular version)

Extremely attractive in black oxide

There are downsides, however, and they are in my opinion:

“Butterknife” shape of the only blade (it does NOT have the familiar drop point that Victorinox usually uses in their SAKs or MTs)

Serrations on that blunt blade take up most of the length

Plain edge is a very small part of the blade near the joint

Philips screwdriver that needs to be squared off as it slips quite easily

Scissors are tiny (and smaller than any other multi-tool I own listed)

Black oxide rubs off onto the hands

Black oxide wears in a particular manner that many will find unattractive

(some do like the patina with black oxide, however)

Overall, I am glad I purchased this Black Oxide Spirit, but it will most likely remain a shelf queen. The Vic Spirit exudes quality and precision crafting. The B.O. is very attractive, but scratches much more easily than the stainless steel version. The very easy manner in which the B.O. rubs off onto the hands can get annoying. People are always split on their opinion of the blunt, “butterknife” shape of the main blade. I dislike it. The serrations are also in the front of the blade, rather than the back part like most other brands. The serrations can be ground off, however.

If you want a drop point blade, then you can get the Spirit “S” version which substitutes a drop point blade, but removes the scissors.

5 Stars Sweet as tupelo honey
A good price on this Victorinox multitool helped convince me I needed one. It replaces an older Multitool (MT) that’s seen a lot of use but now that I have this Spirit MT I’m not looking back at the other brand I once carried. No regrets, old timer but this new one is a dandy. Tools - useful, well designed. They’re tight now and it takes some effort to access the assorted gizmos and geegaws but I suspect they’ll loosen up with use. Size = great, so is the belt carrying case. I like the MT’s dark finish. I’m no mall ninja but I still like my tools to look like tools and not flash like signal mirrors. It’s a Victorinox, so you know the sharp blades actually ARE sharp, the screwdrivers actually can drive a screw. Good fit, good finish, good form and function. Great price. You still reading this? Go hit the buy button and then get busy fixing things.

3 Stars Great Tool - “Black Oxidised Finish” not so great
From a purely functional point of view, the tool is fantastic. It’s a great thing to bring along in the backpack to fix just about anything on the go. The black finish, however, isn’t so great. Every time I use it, some black finish comes off on my hand - this makes the tool not so great to use in the office or other “clean” environment.

5 Stars Perfect sized quality multitool
I used to carry a well known name brand multi-tool myself until I found a couple superior options ( based on 30+ years as a fire fighter, police officer and bomb disposal ( EOD ) technician ). I have owned most every multi tool out there and abused them all ( that’s why the good ones have a lifetime warranty . ) and the two Victorinox Swiss Army Knife SwissTools I carry on and off the job are top of the line. For a duty multitool I carry a full size Swisstool, off the job it’s a Swisstool Spirit “S” because of the size and tool selection it’s a perfect fit for me . Don’t waste your money on anything else - ” Leather Guy” can’t come close to a Victorinox in performance and Warranty - in my opinion and EXPERIENCE !!!

The Victorinox SwissTool Spirit “S” which comes equipped with both a plain edge AND a serrated blade / seat belt cutter ( no scissors - who needs a pair of scissors on a multitool ?) is the multitool of choice if you want something that will not weigh you down. Little brother of the full size Swisstool lineup the Spirit “S”is the choice of many - 27 functions in this powerhouse and it’s now available in a black oxidized finish . Victorinox Swisstools are quality unsurpassed , as are ALL of the lineup of Swiss Army Knives. The implements on the SwissTool are well thought out, each tool is individually accessible and locks securely in place and you have access to ALL the tools with the pliers in the closed position. The knife blades are scary sharp and probably the sharpest of any production line knife made today, plus they are stainless steel. The design and feel of the Spirit “S”speaks of it’s quality, ruggedness and ability to do the job. I have broken the plier head jaws on several other manufacturers multitools , never on a Swisstool, including the Swisstool Spirit “S”, they are made to last a lifetime. I have had occasion to send Swiss Army Knives to the service center for repairs… however a Swisstool has never had to make that journey. The nylon pouch is durable and the tool fits it perfectly, the type of quality you expect from the Swiss. Made in Switzerland with a lifetime warranty. Street price around $50.00.

5 Stars Lightweight and precise
I’ve definitely put this tool through a lot. It’s been a great knife for me. I use it as an alternative to my Swiss Tool when I want something a little lighter on my belt. It’s incredibly lightweight for what it can do. And the quality is impeccable.

Based on my personal experience, I have to disagree with the other reviewers about the black oxide rub-off issue. Maybe I just got lucky with my Spirit, but I’ve never had the black oxide rub off in over a year of regular use.

By the way, thanks for the elaborate review, E. Kim!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars An Almost Perfect Knife.
I have a number of different Swiss Army Knives, but since purchasing this one it has become my favorite. The other locking Victorinox knife I have uses an unusual “latch” mechanism that does not lock the blade up securly, but the liner lock on this knife is first rate with a solid lock up. Releasing the lock may be a bit clumbsy at first, but once you become accustomed to it it works easily. There ergonomics of the knife are great, the one-hand opening feature working well, and the handle fitting my hand just righ.

My only realy complaint about the knive is the strange serrations on the main blade, with only a short length of plain edge near the handle. This will be hard to sharpen and in my opinion not particularly useful. I would have much preferred a plain edged blade with a decent point on it, but I suppose the serrated blade is servicable.

5 Stars Outstanding knife.
My One-Hand Trekker is a great companion in town or in the outdoors. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Get one and never leave home without it!

5 Stars Excellent multifunction knife
I have a similar model that I keep in case of emergencies in one of our cars and got this one for our other car. Aesthetically, I’m not sure about the one-handed opening blade, and functionally, I’m not sure about the serration on the large blade, but both may come in handy someday.

5 Stars Great Product
This knife is great. Unfortunately, I just lost it on a trip overseas….needless to say that I will be buying another one.

5 Stars May just be the best pocket knife around at this time
I’ve never really liked the glossy, slippery surfaces on the more traditional Swiss Army Knife (SAK) models. Sure, in a pinch they’ll do. But I’ve never purchased one of my own because they just don’t feel right in my hand (though I really appreciate the SwissTool and would replace mine right away if it went missing). The basic pocket knives always seemed too small and/or unwieldy for my taste.

But the Trekker design is a different animal. This knife has been around for a while under different names, but I only found it this year. For my needs, it is in many ways the ultimate pocket knife. To be honest, there are some iffy things about the design:

- The serrated edge blade version (which I own) seems like it would be difficult to sharpen.

- The saw and awl tools should lock in my opinion.

- The phillips head screwdriver is awkwardly positioned.

- The handle surfaces aren’t as solid when the hand is sweaty…a rubberized, tacky grip would work better.

Minor complaints aside, for the money this is a great knife. I don’t mind the backward liner lock or the weight. I strapped a paracord lanyard to it and it ties nicely around my belt loop and falls into the pocket without moving around too much. I may sometimes dream that a pair of pliers would pop out of the Trekker, but oh well. For the form factor and layout, it is what it is…a pocket knife. Get a SwissTool for everything else.

Overall, I really like this knife. It comes out of the box very sharp and the Victorinox blades are known for keeping a good edge for a while. The build quality is solid and I can see it lasting me a long time, even with regular use. I also own the Kershaw Blur and Benchmade Griptilian folding knives and while I respect them both, the Trekker is traveling with me more often these days. The additional tools make it a more practical option for everyday carry in my opinion.

5 Stars new Swiss Army a winner
I finally decided to buy a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife because I knew I would get a lot of use out of it at work as well as home. I’ve never owned a Swiss Army Knife, just cheap imitations (which this ain’t). While browsing their online catalog and searching for the right compromise between features and size, I saw that the new standard-issue soldier knife had just gone on sale for 2009.

I was attracted to the olive drab color scheme, much more businesslike than the Swiss red. Since it’s brand new and I’m a geek, I had to have it. Factory site says it’s 4 and 3/8″ long closed, which is on the big end of the pocketknife scale IMO. Some may even carry this in a belt pouch, but I find it very pocketable. The grips are lightweight, hard plastic with softer black inserts. The matte texture is very easy to hold and won’t show fingerprints or smears. Comfortable in the hand.

The size of the knife, along with the tool loadout, make it more suited for outdoorsmen, soldiers (go figure), and assorted “rural adventurers”. The knife blade opens easily with one hand, lefty or righty, and locks with a satisfying clink!. The lower 1″ of the blade is plain (and sharp!) and the rest out to the tip is serrated. Fun fact: I believe they bill this blade as a “seatbelt cutter” as well. I carry the Swiss knife alongside a plain folding knife, so I don’t really miss having a plain blade, but this may be a concern for some.

The bottle opener is the only other tool with a liner lock; it doubles as a big flat screwdriver and it has a little wire-stripper notch onboard (works well on small wires, fyi). The can opener has a small flat screwdriver at the end. The saw is accessed by pulling up on the blunt tip on the blade (it sticks out of the knife just enough to get ahold of but not enough to snag anything). Its ability to fell small trees is limited only by your patience. The keychain attachment point could be used for a lanyard or something too, because it’s kind of a big knife for a keyring. The Philips screwdriver is fine but boring, so I won’t talk anymore about it. The “reamer” is a fearsome looking sharp little dude, useful for punching reamer-shaped holes in about anything (use your imagination), but be careful because it doesn’t lock open.

This knife is all about craftsmanship and good steel, no cheese to be found. It’s got the quality you’d expect from Victorinox, especially since they’re building these for the military. It comes together like a Swiss watch, or maybe a bank vault. I look forward to slaying a lot of beer bottles and odd jobs with it, and if it turns out to be a lifesaver someday then that’s cool too.

4 Stars Swiss Army Soldier Knife
I bought this knife as a camping backpacking knife. I wanted a one hand opening knife that had the the basic Swiss Army knife tools on it. I have many Swiss Army knives and they are always excellent in quality, and in fit and finish. This knife was as good as the best of them. First rate, but it is not really a one hand opening knife unless you have a lot of time to open it. A Spyderco knife can be shaken open, but this knife has the liner lock pressing on the blade so it can not be easily opened. I got two minor cuts playing around with it. I was lucky. I now take it very seriously, and use two hands to open it. It is razor sharp. This knife is an excellent camping knife, but respect it.

5 Stars a simple, sturdy knife
I carry this knife with me all the time, and I do a lot of outdoors activities, mainly long hikes. I carry a Mora carbon steel as my main knife, but this one is more than adequate for other jobs or as a backup. The saw is smaller than my camp saw, of course, but is capable of some decent sized saplings. This knife is more than capable of everyday jobs, as well as many wilderness tasks. It will not replace a full size blade or a campsaw, but it definitely has its place.
