Suunto X3HR Heart Rate Wrist Top Computer Watch with Altimeter Barometer and Thermometer

The last thing you need during your training session is a heart rate monitor with more confusing features than all the James Bond watches combined. Although a spinning saw bezel would be cool, it’s not exactly necessary. With a heart rate monitor, an altimeter, interval timers, and an eight-session memory, the Suunto X3HR Heart Rate Monitor gives you just what you need for a training run, bike ride, or hike. This training watch features an easy-to-read graphic heart rate display with your current heart rate and target zone, so you get a quick and complete view of your workout at a glance. The X3HR stores your ascent and descent levels, minimum and maximum heart rate, and training time, for up to eight separate sessions. What this watch doesn’t have is a million confusing buttons, laser-tractor-beam capability, or grappling hook extensions.

4 Stars great value
I know this guy is out of production (or seems to be) but I have to add my voice to the positive reviews - I had one of these for probably three years, hiking, biking, swimming - it’s prone to interference from other heart monitor watches but other than that, it’s bulletproof.

The easy change battery was awesome too because it does eat batteries maybe every month or two with active use.

No complaints, tight build quality and now they’ve added temp to the firmware apparently. I’m back ordering my second one.

1 Star Mistake
This watch has been a total waste of money. The temperature and altitude features are completely inaccurate and the heart rate monitor only reads part of the time. I would strongly recommend purchasing a different watch.

2 Stars Worst altimeter watch I’ve owned
This is my third Altimeter watch, my original Suunto ran like a champ for years until finally giving up 3 years ago. I then went to a Highgear, more accurate than mu original Suunto. When the face of my Highgear came apart for no reason, I returned it to REI and bought the X3HR.

Negative- display items too small and often hard to read; it is strictly a secondary altimeter due to the small atitude display, by backlight quit working after 3 months.

Positive- Smaller and less geeky than other altimeter watches

1 Star new watch didn’t work
The heartrate monitor function on this watch didn’t work right out of the box. I tried everything, even replacing the battery in the transmitter and couldn’t get the watch to recognize my heart rate or anyone elses. Amazon was great about taking the watch back but what a pain. This is the second x3hr I have ordered that has been defective. The first one was not from Amazon however and the screen froze then the battery died the day after I received it. These watches seem like a bargain for all of the functions they have, but they also seem to be unreliable.

4 Stars Suunto X3HR Altimeter Watch
This watch was a replacement for the High Gear Loft that I lost. Though the Loft readout was larger, which is easier to read than the X3HR, the XR offer more data and information in the HR, altimeter and stop watch modes. The instruction manual has some info that is not correct concerning the HR and altimeter modes readout order of the data. It is not that big of a deal but I called Suunto anyway and they were surprised no one else had notice the book errors. The watch works great and I enjoy using it when I am biking, hiking and snow boarding.

Suunto X Lander Wrist Top Computer Watch with Altimeter Barometer Compass and Chronograph

The ultimate option for the outdoor enthusiast, the silver Suunto X-Lander wrist-top computer offers an accurate altimeter, a complete barometer, a precise electronic compass, and a multifunction sports watch in a single elegant package. Regardless of your excursion–whether it’s climbing mountains, riding a muddy bike track, or skiing off piste–you need accurate, real-time information about your surroundings to pull off a successful trip. The X-Lander contributes by not only providing important data, but also keeping track of your activities so you can make rational decisions at key moments. In addition, the watch is user-friendly and solidly built, with a non-allergenic aluminum casing, a carbon-fiber back, a durable mineral crystal glass, and a water-resistant fabric strap.

The built-in altimeter, which boasts a range of up to 29,500 feet, puts all 14 of the world’s 8,000-plus-meter summits within the avid climber’s range. Among the altimeter’s functions are an altitude measurement function that lets you follow the vertical progress between stages, an automatic 24-hour memory that stores the altitude and ascent/decent rate for every hour, and an adjustable altitude alarm. Climbers will also dig the logbook function, which lets you record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents as well as the number of runs skied.

The X-Lander also displays the current barometric pressure and temperature–a must for activities in which weather plays a factor. The device automatically records barometric data for the previous four days, with the first six hours manifested in one-hour intervals and the rest in six-hour intervals. When the reference altitude is set correctly, the instrument also displays the present sea level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.

And few things are more important when exploring unfamiliar territory than a compass. The X-Lander’s electronic compass contributes by guiding you with cardinal or half- cardinal points and a North-South arrow. The compass can also be set to track a certain bearing, which helps you follow a chosen direction. Meanwhile, the unit’s declination adjustment function allows you to correct the difference between true North and magnetic North.

In addition to the variety of outdoor functions, the X-Lander also displays normal time, with such add-ons as three daily alarms, a calendar programmed to the year 2089, a stopwatch with split-time measurement, and a countdown timer. Other features include a durable negative LCD display, a user-replaceable battery, and water-resistance to 100 feet. The X-Lander is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

4 Stars Great Compass Watch, So Far!
I purchased the X-Lander Military version of this watch (all black, rubber strap). I’ve scraped it across several hard objects, and it has yet to show scratches. I love the compass and reverse display. You have to be careful when setting up the watch, as it is easy to change the factory defaults on the barometer. The elevation data seems to change constantly with barometric pressure, but I’m assuming that this is always the case with this type of instrument as its not tied to GPS. My chief complaint is that the buckle is hard to unfasten (acutally, the tab that holds the end of the strap in place).

5 Stars Suunto Military X-Lander
The Mil X-Lander is one impressive piece of equipment. It is a an ABC watch that is built to withstand some pretty harsh environments. The watch wears large on the wrist, but it is perfectly at home on the trail as it is in the office. I do a lot of bushwalking and mountain biking and the barometer and compass are easy to set and use and the alti is very accurate. I would recommend this to anyone who is out in the scrub or who just wants a bloody great watch for everyday use.

3 Stars Nice watch
it’s a nice watch but depending on the sun light you can’t see the numbers, also when your are in the shadows… everything else works as it says the catalog…

5 Stars all-doingwatch
Very well constructed watch. Recommended for anyone in the military or who enjoys outdoor activities.

1 Star Buy a Casio….
I hope my experience with this particular watch is the exception, but I found absolutely nothing ‘military’ grade about this watch: The band broke after a few months of VERY light use, and Suunto does not offer a similar band as a replacement, but rather a generic band, taking away quite a bit from the watch’s overall appearance. A few months after the band broke, the compass stopped functioning; I’m not sure how sitting on my desk caused the compass to stop working correctly, but there you have it. I have spoken to other Suunto owners who have had the same issue with the compass function.

I have owned Casio Pathfinder watches in the past, and they have been FAR superior in regards to both longevity, reliability, and ease of use. My last one survived 5 yrs of hard use (scuba diving, surfing, mountains and deserts…) before giving up the ghost. And it cost about half of what the Suunto cost me. I thought I would try a different brand, but the Suunto survived less than a year of light/no use, no submersion or impacts. I have used Suunto products in the past (compasses) with no problems, but I would not buy another watch from this manufacturer. Hope this helps.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great multi-use tool
This is my second watch - lost the first after 4 years - and never hesitated about repurchasing the same exact watch. It is complex in its functionality, but simple to use. My primary use in tracking vertical gain/descent in biking and skiing allows me to accurate view my results with amazing accuracy - often times more accurate than GPS units. The compass is accurate, but not always operable based on your location. Durability is exceptional - my original was dropped, skied over once, and smacked on rocks and trees to many times to count. Excellent time piece for the outdoor adventurer.

4 Stars Durable watch with lots of options
I have had this watch for over 3 years and the only problem I have found is the compass has to be frequently recalibrated. I have had issues with some batteries messing the calibration up. When I try to use the compass while walking in a circle it reads from 95 degrees to 243 then jumps back to 95 degrees.

I have owned numerous watches over the years but this is by far my most favorite, regardless of the compass issue.

The only thing I would change is you can only monitor the barometric pressure or the altitude. It would be nice to monitor both, though not sure if this is feasible due to the watch using pressure to monitor both. This was difficult to keep up with while over seas (the resources to obtain the barometric pressure aren’t as readily available as they are here).

5 Stars Takes a lickin and i ain’t bullsittin’
outdoor oriented lad, grew tired of purchasing thirty dollar timex watch only to fall apart in three months. purchased this watch upon its inception around year 2001 or so. great watch, puts up with my inability to tender gently while being worn. my only piece of advice-spend the extra bucks and purchase the stainless/titanium band. the elastomer band does not last and is nothing more than a futile effort to stay affixed to wrist. great customer service, excellent & accurate features, and rarely do i endorse items but this one warrants lavish praise.

5 Stars great watch!!!

This is my second Suunto watch, Everything is as I expected. This time I bought the watch with the metal case; smaller than the previous watch, but the numbers are large enough to see at night with the back light with out my glasses. All in all; I am very pleased with my choice and the product. ub

5 Stars Best watch I have ever used
I love this watch. It is sturdy, beautiful, easy to read, built like a tank and very durable. It is about the right size, unlike some other Suunto watches that resemble dinner plates. The compass is as good as the one in my plane. My only criticism is that the sound of the alarm is so faint that it will not wake me up. If a wakeup alarm is a big priority do not buy this watch or you will be disappointed. The faint alarm is a problem that is a compromise related to the high quality of the case. I am on a multi-decade search for the perfect watch, but this one beats everything so far including my Rolex Explorer.

Suunto Core Wrist Top Computer Watch Replacement Strap Light Black

Suunto Core Wrist Top Computer Watch Replacement Strap Light Black

Light black strap for Suunto Core watch.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Typical Suunto quality but over priced.
This is typical Suunto high quality but the msrp price Suunto sets for their rubber strap is too high. One nice thing about this strap is you will get the silver lugs to use with other non Suunto 24mm straps to fit on your Suunto Core.

5 Stars Suunto Core Flat Strap (Black)
Excellent 24mm strap with great feel. Highly recommended for the Core or other watches where you would need it. The price is a little steep, though.

2 Stars Not worth it
Had this strap for a year and, without all that much rough wear, it broke in two places. First, the small piece/loop that is intended to hold the “extra” strap to the band tore off. I kept wearing it using a doubled-over loop of duct tape to keep the strap tame, but before long the entire strap tore at one of the holes in the band. Not to mention it didn’t stay orange for very long since the orange just collects dirt and turns much of it black/brown after a few months. Unless you’re intending to only wear your Core around the house and never actually use it for what it’s intended for, get a more durable strap. I gave it two stars instead of one because it was actually quite comfortable.

Suunto Advizor Wrist Top Computer Watch with Barometer Compass Altimeter and Chronograph

Suunto’s Advizor Wristop Computer is more than just a techno-geek toy. With an accurate compass and features such as measurement of air pressure and temperature, the Advizor can keep you on the right track during your outdoor adventures.

The Advizor also doubles as a digital personal trainer, with a heart rate monitor via its included chest strap. We clipped the strap on under a shirt (it will also work through the shirt, but you’ll need to get the shirt quite wet), moistened the electrodes, and the Advizor automatically picked up our heartbeat. With the plastic bar on the front, the strap wasn’t exactly comfortable, but we were able to forget about it after getting into our workout.

The simple-to-use monitor worked well for setting a target heart rate zone and alerted us by beeping an alarm when we went over or under the range. The heart rate monitor also stores information from past workouts, which let us keep track of average heart rate, maximum and minimum rates, and time spent in and out of the target heart rate zone.

Like other Suunto watches, the Advizor offers a barometer mode that keeps track of air pressure and trends (which let you forecast changes in the weather) as well as temperature. However, as the watch’s reading is affected by body heat, using the temperature gauge while working out can be problematic.

It also features a compass, useful for cross-country hiking and running, as well as an altimeter–accurate to within 10 feet. We did have to reset the altimeter rather frequently as it measures altitude using the barometer, so changes in air pressure can affect the altitude reading.

Its outer plastic bezel proves handy in different modes for showing barometric changes or changes in altitude denoted by a segmented digital circle that lights up around the perimeter of the watch.

And hey, get this, it tells time too. The watch functions of the Advizor include three alarms, a stopwatch, and a countdown timer. A bright backlight illuminates the watch face in dark environments, and it’s also waterproof to 100 feet. (Note, however, that it’s not a diving watch, so you can’t use the buttons to manipulate the modes while underwater.)

The Advizor is more expensive than other Suunto watches and other heart-rate monitors. But if you need all these tools packed into one device and are willing to pay for the consolidation, the Advizor definitely does a nice impersonation of a digital Swiss Army knife. –J. Curtis

Pros:

  • Accurate heart rate monitor
  • Ruggedly designed–great for the outdoors
  • Easy to switch between modes

Cons:

  • Large size can be unwieldy on wrist

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars solid equipment
I’ve worn mine since Decemeber of 1999, it’s still running strong and accurate. Gone through a few Heart Rate Chest straps, batteries and also replaced the bezel and strap. Would love to by my next Suunto but not ready to pack this one away.

5 Stars Suunto Advizor
I’m very happy with this new acquisition, the product is excellent and meet with my expectations.

3 Stars Technically Sound
Great features, but the display is hard to read unless you are direcly over the watch at zero angle. The field to the left of the hour display often displays other numbers at slight angles. I have had many watches(SuUNTO, Oregon Scientific, Bulova, Casio, nIKE) and none have aver done this. Im sure when I contact SUUNTO they will help me out. Just got the watch and havent had time. If it wasnt for that it would be TOP rated. So I will give it 3 stars….for now.

5 Stars Very Comfortable Watch
Originally purchased this watch in 2000, lost it in 2008 and bought a replacement. Have worn it around the world on a daily basis. I’ve knocked it against many things with the only damage shown being a few scuffs on the face. Did have to replace the watch band a couple of times. The band on the first one seemed to be bit sturdier than the newer ones.

I have a large wrist and most other watches dig into my skin and are uncomfortable, this one is very comfortable. I have also found the dual time zones and the choice of 12 hour or 24 hour format to be very beneficial.

4 Stars Suunto Advizor
Pros:

1. Great watch with a TON of features. Not many compass, altimeter, barometer combo watches also come with a heart rate monitor. That’s impressive.

2. This is one of the best styled watches I’ve ever owned.

3. Very comfortable and easy wearing band.

Cons:

1. Suunto Watches have terrible function navigation. There is no intuitive function design to these watches.

2. I use a stopwatch often and the stopwatch function can only be accessed through another function - which was a big negative for me causing me to give the watch away to a friend.
