5 Stars Great multi-use tool
This is my second watch - lost the first after 4 years - and never hesitated about repurchasing the same exact watch. It is complex in its functionality, but simple to use. My primary use in tracking vertical gain/descent in biking and skiing allows me to accurate view my results with amazing accuracy - often times more accurate than GPS units. The compass is accurate, but not always operable based on your location. Durability is exceptional - my original was dropped, skied over once, and smacked on rocks and trees to many times to count. Excellent time piece for the outdoor adventurer.

4 Stars Durable watch with lots of options
I have had this watch for over 3 years and the only problem I have found is the compass has to be frequently recalibrated. I have had issues with some batteries messing the calibration up. When I try to use the compass while walking in a circle it reads from 95 degrees to 243 then jumps back to 95 degrees.

I have owned numerous watches over the years but this is by far my most favorite, regardless of the compass issue.

The only thing I would change is you can only monitor the barometric pressure or the altitude. It would be nice to monitor both, though not sure if this is feasible due to the watch using pressure to monitor both. This was difficult to keep up with while over seas (the resources to obtain the barometric pressure aren’t as readily available as they are here).

5 Stars Takes a lickin and i ain’t bullsittin’
outdoor oriented lad, grew tired of purchasing thirty dollar timex watch only to fall apart in three months. purchased this watch upon its inception around year 2001 or so. great watch, puts up with my inability to tender gently while being worn. my only piece of advice-spend the extra bucks and purchase the stainless/titanium band. the elastomer band does not last and is nothing more than a futile effort to stay affixed to wrist. great customer service, excellent & accurate features, and rarely do i endorse items but this one warrants lavish praise.

5 Stars great watch!!!

This is my second Suunto watch, Everything is as I expected. This time I bought the watch with the metal case; smaller than the previous watch, but the numbers are large enough to see at night with the back light with out my glasses. All in all; I am very pleased with my choice and the product. ub

5 Stars Best watch I have ever used
I love this watch. It is sturdy, beautiful, easy to read, built like a tank and very durable. It is about the right size, unlike some other Suunto watches that resemble dinner plates. The compass is as good as the one in my plane. My only criticism is that the sound of the alarm is so faint that it will not wake me up. If a wakeup alarm is a big priority do not buy this watch or you will be disappointed. The faint alarm is a problem that is a compromise related to the high quality of the case. I am on a multi-decade search for the perfect watch, but this one beats everything so far including my Rolex Explorer.

5 Stars Good Product
I was impressed with the display. It is very easy to read in all light conditions.

4 Stars Great Watch
This is a great watch, especially for small to medium build guys. It’s a good size watch but it’s not nearly the dinner plate replacement that some of it’s ABC brethren are.

2 Stars Nice case, inacceptable band
I’ve used this watch for 4 years now and I like the case very much. But the band, either Titanium or SS ( practically the same ) is definitely unacceptable. I’ve changed it 3 times and lost a watch to it.

Other annoyances :

+ Watch is not full SS or Titanium.

+ Alarm is inaudible

2 Stars Band is not Ti
Caveat emptor. The band is mostly resin with some Ti shards. Alarm is inaudible. Otherwise a good timepiece.

2 Stars Great Watch, Terrible Strap
To summarize, this is a great watch, saddled with a bad and expensive strap design.

As a watch, the design is quite good - it is sturdy and very feature rich. There are a few minor shortcomings, however.

- The user interface is poorly designed. Some of the features will be completely inaccessible to you unless you have a photographic memory or have the manual in your hands.

- The thermometer is on your wrist. This makes it an inaccurate reference for determining the existing ambient temperature, or your body temperature. To get an accurate reading of the ambient temperature, it’s best to remove the watch, and let it sit for a while.

- A lack of a count-down timer. (However, there is an alarm)

- Very quiet alarm, inaudible in louder settings.

The truly disappointing component of this watch is the bad strap design.

- It costs $120 to replace (1/3rd the price of the whole watch!) After scouring the Internet and Ebay, I was completely unable to a significantly better price on the strap.

- It is an integrated strap, so it can only be replaced Suunto Observer strap, not a generic watch strap.

- The watch bracelet is not a full metal bracelet - it is only a rubber strap with metal inserts for looks only. I personally don’t mind this, but some people dislike it.

- The only way to size the bracelet to your wrist is to cut it with a pair of scissors! If you make a mistake cutting your strap, it will cost you $120. This also means that you cannot loan the watch to anyone who does not have the exact same wrist size as you. I have never seen this kind of design before in another watch.

- The rubber/elastomer part of the bracelet is a particularly cheap material. The forums are full of complaints of strap failure. Depending on your wear level, the strap will fail after a few years. Suunto refuses to sell the elastomer part of the bracelet separately, even if you speak to customer service. Instead, they will insist you need to purchase a new strap kit for $120. This is ridiculous for a part that costs pennies to manufacture.

Realize that you will be paying $120 every few years for as long as you wear this watch.

5 Stars Just what I needed!
I’ve wanted a HRM since I started working out about a year ago, but I couldn’t muster the courage (or money!) to get this one until recently. I bought another one that only gave you your heart rate on demand (instead of constantly), and it drove me up the wall. So I sucked it up and bought this as a replacement.

I LOVE this watch. I was floored at how easy it was to use. I didn’t even have to read the handbook to figure it out. The chest strap is surprisingly comfy. Yes, you will probably need to wet the probes before you start working out, but I put it on, run around the house picking things up or doing laundry and it usually works when I’m ready to go out for a walk/run. I love that the watch blends in and looks like a regular watch so you can wear it without feeling like you are wearing a man’s watch or a small computer!

The only problem I have with the watch is that I can’t get it as tight as I would like because the strap kind of sticks when trying to attach it or take it off. Nothing major, I just have to remember that I have to be more aware of it than I would of a normal watch.

**If you are a larger woman, the watch automatically comes with a size “medium” strap, but it fits me with room to spare. I highly suggest trying the one it comes with before ordering a larger one!**

Bottom line: LOVE this product. If you want something that will work easily and well, buy this HRM!

5 Stars A real life saver.
This little device actually saved my life while running…. A great investment at any price….

1 Star Can’t use it with Sun Tan Lotion
I got this F4 as a Christmas present in 2008. Two weeks later the buttons cracked and fell off. Polar sent me new buttons, and two weeks later the buttons cracked again. I sent the unit to polar two more times and the buttons only lasted 2 weeks each time.

I called their service department and escallated the issue. I spoke to Albert, who said that sun tan lotion damages the buttons so they break. He suggested either not using sun tan lotion or wearing a wrist band under the watch. GIVE ME A BREAK!!! I live in San Diego and I wear sun tan lotion 360 days per year. Polar said their new units do not have that problem, but they would not replace my F4 with a good one.

I will never buy another Polar product.

1 Star Polar seems to need some competition
First, if you buy one of these be aware that it’s extremely easy to accidently wipe out all the personal and cardio info it stores. There isn’t any way to lock this monitor to protect such loss.

I sent this monitor in for repair. They emailed me to tell me they received the monitor. They emailed me to tell me they replaced the circuit board. They had my monitor over a month. I got this monitor back and it works exactly the same as before I sent it in. They did nothing to it. Yes I know how to read and I always read the manuals for everything I buy. This monitor does not display the time when brought to the transmitter belt like it say’s it will in the manual. There isn’t any way for me to have this display the time while it is monitoring.

4 Stars Good Buy
I am very satisfied with this purchase. The only reason im not giving it five stars is because it doesnt have a stop watch or a pedometer. I have a small wrist, and the watch face is a good size especially if you dont like a bulky look. It is comfortable and the band stays put. It is easy to operate, and set up. you can easily turn the sound on or off. The strap is probably the same as all others and occasionally when i switch from doing cardio to weight training the clasp will pop apart, but that only happens occassionally.
