Suunto Motion Activated Foot POD

The new smaller and lighter Suunto Foot POD wirelessly transmits speed and distance data to your Suunto Wristop Computer heart rate monitor, providing you a more complete analysis of your workout. It features accurate data collection during both indoor and outdoor workouts by measuring each stride with built-in acceleration sensors and speed limit alarms alert you if you’re going above or below your preset limits. When combined with the integrated altimeter of a Suunto T6 or T6c, you’ll get an even more complete picture of your performance–uphill, downhill, and on any terrain. It has a water resistance rating of 30 meters (100 feet), enabling it to withstand rain and splashes of water, but not swimming.

About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.

By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.

In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass–initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto’s exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto’s key values from the very beginning of the company history.

Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world’s biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

4 Stars Fiesty Footpod
I bought the footpod to use with my T6C for Ultra-Marathon training. With just over 100 miles on it I have had no issues with the function of this device. Once calibrated it is very accurate (many comparison runs wearing it and my Garmin 301, both measure very close), and works better than my Garmin 301 when running wooded trails where the GPS can’t get a clear look at the sky. No issues in the rain or when crossing creeks, and the device itself it hardly noticeable when on your shoe.

The only problem I have with it is it is very difficult to detach from the base plate when you want to move it to another pair of shoes. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I can’t seem to find “the right way” and I have a tough go everytime I want to move it from my trail shoes to my road shoes. On a positive note, I have no fear whatsoever of losing it…

3 Stars More convenient than GPS.
First, I purchased the Suunto GPS and found it to be a pain to use. It involved waiting for 5 to 10 minutes to recieve a GPS satellite connection. I often run trails, and the GPS would loose connection and leave me feeling lost in the woods. I “bit the bullet” and purchased the foot pod to be more convenient. It is definetly more convenient and has worked well indoors and out. The accuracy is questionable at times and often does not match the treadmill or my Garmin GPS, but it is in the ballpark. I would buy this rather than the GPS if I had it to do over.

5 Stars Works great, read the instructions
You gotta turn it face down to synch it, otherwise it is GREAT. Of course, if you read the instructions (unlike me at first) you would know this. But it’s fine and very accurate and I actually didn’t neet to make a big fuss about calibration.

4 Stars Quick and Easy
No Calibration was required, it was spot on the first time I took it for a run.

My only complaint is the clip on device broke in one area, I can’t say I didn’t cause it though b/c I’ve gone through six pairs of shoes now (and it hasn’t fallen off yet).

I’ve done some decent trail running with it and through the mud and puddles there hasn’t been any lack in its performance.

Great way to keep track of your speed and distance, just don’t forget to enable your watch to record it.

4 Stars Nice POD
I used twice and it worked perfectly! The price is OK. This product is perfect for trainning in places where you don’t know the distances.

I recommend.

2 Stars not as good as it seems
With the goal of training for the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon, I sought a tool that would keep me informed during my workouts. This is not it. I read lots of reviews and also examined this item in person in a store. I purchased it hoping I would be able to navigate it’s controls more easily than other users since I consider myself technically adept. As other reviewers said (and I should have listened) this product is too difficult to operate and most importantly, the manual is unclear and incomplete.

To Amazon’s credit, the return process was remarkably easy! Full refund, postage paid, no questions asked. Thank you! Just be sure you keep ALL of your original packaging if you are as stubborn as me and decide to buy this. Otherwise, they will not likely take it back.

Subsequently, instead of choosing value as the deciding factor in picking my training tool, I chose quality. I wear a GPS enabled Garmin with a bezel/touch screen and love it. I wore it during training and as I ran and finished the WDW Marathon . I love it.

Good luck. And happy running.

5 Stars perfect training aide
The perfect information about your training status.I like the automatically adapted activity level most. It indicates very clearly whether you follow your training schedule or not.

Very reproducible foot pod numbers!! The measurement is +- 2% correct - incredible!

1 Star Will never by from Amazon again!
For the last probably 10 years I was a happy Amazon customer. That changed with my last Running Pack order. Amazon priced out the pack for $148.25. I found that a really great deal compared to other companies so I went ahead and bought it. The real seller of the product was `Watchsavings’ (or Jomashop) which sent me the product by UPS ground. But it turned out that they sent me the wrong product. So I called in and requested the running pack I ordered and what would be the best way to proceed. First of all, `Watchsavings’ told me that they don’t have the product al all and it was Amazon’s mistake they put it on their website for that “great deal”. They suggested that I send the wrong product back and order the pack instead from `Jomashop’ (was out of stock). Next thing was I called Amazon and they told me that it was Watchsavings’ product and I would have to deal with them! Great!! At that time I checked the Amazon website again for the T3 Running pack and now they offered it from another seller for $250, not really the amount I spent. What great situation: none of these two felt somehow responsible for the mistake or was able to deliver the product I ordered for the price I (of course) already paid. I sent the wrong delivery back to Watchsavings and got finally after one month my money back. I ordered the T3 running pack with another Internet seller, which was still cheaper that Amazon and provided an excellent service compared to Amazon or Watchsavings. I gave one star because I got my money back. Do not by from Amazon! Either they want to sell something they don’t have or they don’t feel responsible for the seller on their profile. I’m really, really disappointed with such a professional company!

5 Stars Simple and Easy
As a triathlete I’m always looking for the next magic electronic workout item. I currently love my Powertap for the bike and now I can add the T3C to that list of loves. It’s not that complex to operate compared to other systems out there. The instructions are clear for those that have used HRMs and Power meters before.

I did research on all running packs from Suunto, Polar and Garmin. The direct results from friends with the new small Garmin is that it is unreliable and the Polar too expensive and complicated. I would prefer the t6 but for the money the t3 is perfect. Plus I don’t lose reception when trail running.

I also got the bike pod and setting up the foot and bike pod is as easy as setting up a basic bike computer. The watch transitions from bike to run easily.

If you have never used an HRM before, you may find this difficult to set up as its not a simple Timex but compared to a Polar this thing was easy.

4 Stars Great training watch
I have used the system for 4 weeks by now and the watch is really great for training. The watch has a good strap that is solid and with a good grip. The watch is overall a good watch with clear reading of the display. The information presented is OK.

The revised heartrate monitor is a significant improvement over the old one. The old would would not reliably provide heart rate information, those problem are all gone with the new model.

The watch provides a lot of information and the interface to the PC is awesome. I am much happier with this system compared to the T3 I had before.

The alarm on the watch is not easily accessible and also not very loud, so the watch has some weaknesses as a general utility.

Suunto t3 Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch Black with Orange Strap

Suunto t3 Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch Black with Orange Strap

More than just a heart rate monitor, the lightweight Suunto T3 helps you train with confidence by providing real-time information on the aerobic benefit of each workout. Runners, bikers, kayakers, and other sports enthusiasts will appreciate the Suunto T3’s combination of robust technology and versatile style.

What if you could glance at your wrist and see the total aerobic benefit of your workout in real-time? You’d know how much harder to push and for how long. Based on your personal fitness profile, the Suunto T3 delivers essential feedback on your aerobic activities, including heart rate, calories burned, and zone training information. You can also add real-time speed and distance data by combining the Suunto T3 with optional Suunto PODs (available separately). To ensure your workout data is accurate, the Suunto T3 is digitally coded for interference-free transmission.

By monitoring your Training Effect (TE), the T3 takes the guesswork out of effective training. Using data from your personal fitness profile, the watch analyzes your physiological progress and translates the data into a simple, one-to-five TE scale. For example, if you want to improve your aerobic fitness at a moderate tempo, you should exercise until your TE meter reads between 3.0 and 3.9, two to four times per week. To improve your aerobic condition more rapidly, but without the risk of over-training, you should push yourself harder once or twice per week, so your TE meter reads 4.0 to 4.9, with a few recovery sessions in the TE 1.0 to 2.0 range.

Training Effect is relative to each individual. While a novice runner might achieve a TE of 4.0 on a four-mile jog, a professional runner might have to complete an uphill marathon to get the same reading. Both runners will have to exercise hard to achieve a TE of 4.0.

The T3 offers dual time, date, alarm, and stopwatch functionality with split/lap.

In addition to being a full-features heart rate monitor and fitness watch, additional functions of the T3 include dual time, date, alarm, and a stopwatch with split/lap.

Key Features:

  • Real-time Training Effect
  • Current heart rate, average heart rate, and maximum heart rate
  • Real-time calories burned
  • Three-tier zone training system with alarms
  • Two adjustable heart rate limits with alarms
  • Compatible with Suunto PC POD (available separately)
  • Dual time, date, and alarm
  • Log memory for 15 workouts
  • Stopwatch with 50 split laps
  • Interval timer
  • User-replaceable battery
  • Heart rate belt with error-free ANT transmission technology
  • Water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet)

4 Stars Great watch!
This watch was for my husband’s birthday. He has had a Polar monitor for a while, but this has more features. I didn’t get the foot pod at the time, but will soon. He likes the sleek look and that the time is very easy to see while running. I disagree with the other reviews about it being “cheap plastic”–most watches of this type are plastic or a synthetic rubber. The band size was easy to adjust, and all in all he loves it!!

3 Stars Decent HRM
I have used this several times and it works well, I like knowing where my HR is and how many calories I’ve burned. In my opinion, it’s not very intuitive, so be prepared to use the manual, and the face does scratch pretty easily. I have had issues in my kickboxing class where the watch cannot find the belt, I’m guessing because of interference with other HRMs. It also doesn’t fit under my (boxing) gloves, which is a hassle, I’ve given up using it during class and have just been using it for biking.

1 Star Terrible User Guide
I returned the watch within 24 hours because I could not understand the user manual and coordinate set-up or on going functions . Also, tried calling customer support and was informed that they were experiencing long wait periods. Waited over 20 minutes, hung up and decided the watch was not for me.

1 Star I don’t recommend this HR Monitor
I do not recommend this product. I have used several Polar Brand HR Monitors over the years and found them to be extremely beneficial for my training efforts. This product has been a problem from the start. I finally figured out that the battery in the chest strap was bad and replaced it. It is till showing clearly bad numbers for the Heart Rate. The watch is difficult to set up and the numbers are hard to read. Sadly I discarded the original packaging so I can’t return it to Amazon and am forced to deal with Suunto’s warranty program.

5 Stars Used or Brand New
I purchased a used T3 (from a retail store) with a dead battery, scratches on the face and no manuals. After replacing the battery, I downloaded the manuals from the American Suunto website (www.SuuntoWatches.com) and found it was easier to understand by looking at the pictures in the user manual while reading the quick start guide. The features are advanced enough to track multi-disciplined or complex training sessions.

The HR monitor will not work very well without inputting your personal stats: height, weight, DOB, gender. I kept the activity level at 5, which is the default setting. “PolyWatch” creme removed all of the scratches. Then I put a Zagg (www.zagg.com) protective film over the face to prevent future scratches.

My T3 looks better than brand new. It was worth taking the time to learn how to use it.

Suunto GPS Pod Wireless Transmitter

The Suunto GPS POD employs the Global Positioning System to track speed and distance across a wide variety of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, inline skating and kayaking. It adds a new dimension to all POD-compatible Suunto heart rate monitors (Suunto t3, Suunto t4 and Suunto t6).

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Unreliable GPS
I purchaced the Suunto T4 and added the GPS to track speed and distance. My wife uses the Garmin 205 and the GPS reception on the Garmin is far superior. Suunto GPS takes along time to initially find a satellite. Once you have a signal it drops it throughout your run. I run in a rural area and still have bad reception. I used the garmin 205 for a couple years and it had very reliable reception. I am considering the foot pod due to the GPS problems.

2 Stars Unreliable. Frustrating to use
I bought this and put it to use on an 8 mile run 4 days after it arrived. It catches on to the satellite but have constant trouble hanging on to the signal as I run. As a result the readings on the T3 fades in and out. It is a very frustrating experience. I had thought of using this to compare against the foot pod, however T3 only allows the use of one (either the foot pod or GPS pod) at a time. Though the foot pod requires frequent calibration it is atleast consistent. I returned the product. I have read better reviews about Garmin. Garmin can cost 3 times as much. At this point, however I am willing to pay extra to get better reliability.

5 Stars Perfect
This pod plus a T6 replaced my annoyingly unreliable Garmin Edge 305, and I could not be happier. The GPS has worked flawlessly. I use it for road biking and trail running. It finds satellites fast and holds reception even under fairly heavy tree and cloud cover. I use the arm strap for running and it’s very comfortable. On my bike I just throw it in a pocket in my handlebar bag and I’m good to go. The battery life is longer than advertised. I wanted to check the accuracy, so I ran several laps on a quarter mile track and it was never more than 1/100 of a mile off.

1 Star Upright
The unit worked very well as long as it was position so that it faced upright to the sky at all times. If I had chosen to mount it on my bike rack, it would have been a good tool. However, I could not get it to stay facing upright enough while walking or running to maintain contact with the satellite, and so I kept losing the signal and needed to stop and reposition the unit.

4 Stars Excellent tool with a T6
Have had my T6 for nearly 3 years with bike, shoe and now GPS pods. Have had GPS pod over a year and use it across several sports– road and MT biking, running, adventure racing, and kayaking. Perfect tool for Ironmans, ARs, ultra-distance events– Does everything I need it to do very well and unlike the other pods requires no calibration. Exceptional overall accuracy but for slower sports the momentary speed numbers may not always stay stable due to GPS inherent positional errors- not a Suunto problem but a GPS satellite problem. If you watch for a couple seconds you’ll have a solid feel for your actual speed– this is only an issue while running; my shoe pod has been fantastic when I’ve used it by comparison. Both are more than adequate for distance and average pacing and speed while biking is dead on. Distance is always accurate. Antenna sensitivity has been good for me; challenge has been the link between watch and pod, they need to be within arm’s length to keep a good connection. Jersey pocket or same arm as watch is fine. Battery life 18-20 hours on alkalines, 30+ hours on lithium aaa’s. I wouldn’t trade mine for anything but only wish it added GPS altitude and lat/long/grid readouts to my T6.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Suunto Bike Pod
First one did not work at all, 2nd one does. It seems to do the job and I like the fact it does not have to be mounted on the fork.

4 Stars Hit or miss
First unit was DOA. Second one seems to work OK but the magnet sensor doesn’t really have a good place to go - my winter bike has fenders and you can’t have the wing in an aerodynamic location when you have them. So… Is it a road bike and is a road bike skewer appropriate, for me? Oh, come on! That’s hardly fair!

Also note, this comes with a bar/wrist adapter so the item description is deceiving/wrong. It may be purchased frequently with one, but just because all of the other people are jumping off of the bridge doesn’t mean that you should!

5 Stars Works well for me
The earlier version of this didn’t work well, or didn’t work at all, on racing bikes. The new version works like a charm on my Softride Triathlon Bike.

I use the bike pod in conjunction with Suunto T-6 watch.

4 Stars Better then Polar
Had Polar and am now switching to Suunto. You can either wear the HRM or mount it on the handlebars if you want to keep tracking your performance. Information is consistently accurate.

5 Stars great product
I’m VERY pleased wit this product! It’s very convenient, keeps the magnet close to the hub, and never misses a beat. I’m using it with a SRM Wireless Pro, and once it was paired up, no problems. I’m buying more for my other bikes!
