Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it’s wise to choose a tent that’s designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you’ll face. For instance, if you’re a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick–especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you’re a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you’ll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you’d like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you’re a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don’t need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it’s easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It’s also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you’re considering.

4 Stars Good Price & Easy Set-Up
Kelty Yellowstone 6-Person Tent (Navy/Grey)

We bought this tent because of the price and reviews. Turns out to be a good purchase. The tent was very easy to setup. Setting up the tent took 1 person about 15 minutes. The tent stood up to quite a bit of wind with no problem, very sturdy. Did not get a chance to test for water-proof. Nice roomy tent, but I do not think 6 people can fit in it, 4 with all your gears would be ideal.

1 Star Pole snapped on first use
One of the main poles failed the first time I tried setting it up. Anchor spikes are flimsy and wouldn’t hold in any real wind. Amazon was great about taking it back.

4 Stars Nice family tent.
This is a really nice tent. Easy to set up, spacious, good for car camping. The tent that we received has a zipper (on the door) that is quirky… it has trouble rounding the corners and doesn’t always work right, so that sometimes the teeth pull apart and you have to “unzip” it and then slowly zip it again to make sure it works right … and it zips better from the inside than the outside, so we’ve found that it is sometimes better when closing the door from the outside to put your hand on the inside of the tent and pull on that part of the zipper until you get it all the way around the corners. This is a minor frustration that might just be a small defect of our particular tent, and perhaps we could exchange it or have it fixed, but it didn’t seem worth the trouble to me. Another frustration we had was when our toddler got ahold of the tent pole and snapped the cord. Totally our fault… we broke it, there was no default with that. But Kelty had great customer service and even though we explained exactly what happened, they replaced the pole. We just had to pay shipping one-way to send the broken pole to them.

5 Stars Great Service.
The company I bought them from are really good with the shipping time. They came to my steps door earlier than promissed. I’m very satisfied with the product. They look as good as in the pictures or better. My cousins love it.

5 Stars perfect fit
perfect fit for my 5 year old. It’s so perfect I’ll probably be looking for a bigger size this time next year. What a great helmet, and my son has no problems wearing it because “it’s cool.” Great buy.

5 Stars Razor Helmet
This Helmet is great, I bought it for my 6 year old niece, and it works great. She is large for her age and it’s a perfect fit. I recommend it highly!!!!!!!!!!

4 Stars Good choice.
This helmet is great. We purchased it for my step-son, along with a Razor brand pocket rocket. He has a large head, so I was concerned that the helmet would not fit, but it has a great fit. He can still wear the helmet, even after outgrowing the bike.

4 Stars Nice helmet…sharp looking
My stepson thinks he is a pro racer now. Very nice helmet with 2 different size paddings to use to adjust to the child’s head. The color is unique as well. Worth the $29.99 I paid, but Wal-Mart sells the same item for the same price. I would rather have it delivered to my door than waste the gas anyways.

5 Stars Great helmet, one size fits all !
My daughter (9) and son (6) can both wear this helmet with their Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross Bike. My son loves the helmet because he no longer has to wear the baby one when he wants to ride his regular bicycle.

3 Stars Woe to the needy!
MY review for this helmet isn’t based on its merits. It’s fine and sturdy. My issue was with the company. We ordered this at Thanksgiving and I guess due to high demand I got an email about 9 days later saying they couldn’t fulfill my order because they were sold out. I went right back on to Amazon and ordered another. Turns out they weren’t sold out at all, just overwhelmed with Christmas orders. I would order this again, but not depend on timely arrival! I would have expected a smoother transaction from these guys. I wouldn’t let my child ride until the helmet arrived, so make sure to order in advance.

5 Stars Great Product
This helmet is great for youths. It fits securely and stays put!! I would highly recommend this product!!!

4 Stars Does the job !!!
It is secure, it does what it is meant to but some graphics would not be unwanted !!!

4 Stars Great
My boys love the helmet. I have not had any resistance as to it being too hot or anything.

5 Stars Great for grandson
Thankfully so far, this helmet hasn’t been put to the “crash test” yet, but it fits comfortably on his head and makes his mom and myself feel much more secure about his safety while he’s on his skateboard.

4 Stars Razor Child V-17 Helmet
Customer support at http://www.kentbicycles.com was very helpful in sorting through which model of V-17 helmet is for children 5+ (small shell) and which is for children 8+ (medium shell). The children 5+ small one is the one reviewed here and was only available online at the time of this purchase. The model number is 97780. If you want the small one be sure it has this model number as opposed to 97778 which is the bigger one for 8+ years old.

My son is almost 5 and still this helmet was pretty loose on him. It comes with two foam inserts, one is slightly thicker than the other. However, they are not meant to be used both at the same time. We have to use them both (safety pinned in) to make it snug. I wish this helmet came with inserts that were desinged to be added to the existing foam to make it tighter instead of designed to use one insert or the other. I later saw another 5+ helmet (may have been a Tony Hawk one) at Toys R Us that had much thicker foam padding and fit him tighter.

Still he loves the helmet and it looks sharp on him. It is of high quality in my opinion.

Razor Skater Multi Sport Helmet and Pad Combo Set

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Razor Skater Multi Sport Helmet and Pad Combo Set

A great package for BMX biking, skateboarding, inline skating, or any other sport that requires protective headgear, this Razor Skater Multi-Sport combo set includes a helmet, two knee pads, and two elbow pads. The 17 vents keep your head cool at all times and the side release buckles make it a breeze to adjust and fasten your chin strap.

Whatever your sport, this rugged Razor helmet and pad set will keep you confidently protected.

The ergonomically designed padding provides the perfect individual fit to guarantee comfort; it also comes with an additional sizing pad. The helmet complies with US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) safety standard.

The knee and elbow pads feature foam cushioning to absorb impact, hard ABS plastic caps for maximum protection from spills, moisture wicking interior, and hook and loop fastened straps to keep pads securely in place. Use only mild soap and water to clean the helmet, straps, and pads.

Fitting a Helmet
Always wear a helmet low in the front to protect the forehead. The front and rear straps should join at a point slightly below and in front of the ears. Always wear the helmet with the chin strap buckle fastened and the strap pulled tight. Make sure the strap is well back against the throat, not on the point of the chin. Straps worn in the point of the chin increase the chance of the helmet coming off in an accident.

2 Stars Razor helmet and pad SET
This says it is suppose to be a combo set with knee pads and elbow pads and all my grandchildren got it the pgk. was the helmet.I triedto get a hold of you to tell you and never got a response. Very dissapointed. Now my grandkids don’t have the knee pads and elbow pads they need to wear.

what to do??

2 Stars Buy pads separately!
The pads that come in this combo are pretty much worthless. The velcro closure is rather small making adjustments limited. Thus they slip and slide a lot. One of the pads ripped from its rivet on the first day with no abuse. The first time my son fell the strap for one of the pad nearly ripped all the way through. These pads might provide protection if you fall over while standing still, but I would recommend getting some thing more durable if you really want to protect your kid. I would have given a one star rating but the helmet is pretty good.

5 Stars Handy to have
I got these for my 8 y/o for Christmas. I got him a bike ramp and a ripstick so I figured he could use these to keep from getting hurt too bad. Delivered quickly and as ordered

4 Stars great helmet
My son loves his helmet and gear very good and fits comfortably, only thing is the knee pads are too tight.

4 Stars Great & Sturdy!!
I loved it and so did my 5 yr old son. Good & Sturdy and I feel good that my son is safe while riding his razor!
