Suunto X Lander Wrist Top Computer Watch with Altimeter Barometer Compass and Chronograph

The ultimate option for the outdoor enthusiast, the silver Suunto X-Lander wrist-top computer offers an accurate altimeter, a complete barometer, a precise electronic compass, and a multifunction sports watch in a single elegant package. Regardless of your excursion–whether it’s climbing mountains, riding a muddy bike track, or skiing off piste–you need accurate, real-time information about your surroundings to pull off a successful trip. The X-Lander contributes by not only providing important data, but also keeping track of your activities so you can make rational decisions at key moments. In addition, the watch is user-friendly and solidly built, with a non-allergenic aluminum casing, a carbon-fiber back, a durable mineral crystal glass, and a water-resistant fabric strap.

The built-in altimeter, which boasts a range of up to 29,500 feet, puts all 14 of the world’s 8,000-plus-meter summits within the avid climber’s range. Among the altimeter’s functions are an altitude measurement function that lets you follow the vertical progress between stages, an automatic 24-hour memory that stores the altitude and ascent/decent rate for every hour, and an adjustable altitude alarm. Climbers will also dig the logbook function, which lets you record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents as well as the number of runs skied.

The X-Lander also displays the current barometric pressure and temperature–a must for activities in which weather plays a factor. The device automatically records barometric data for the previous four days, with the first six hours manifested in one-hour intervals and the rest in six-hour intervals. When the reference altitude is set correctly, the instrument also displays the present sea level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.

And few things are more important when exploring unfamiliar territory than a compass. The X-Lander’s electronic compass contributes by guiding you with cardinal or half- cardinal points and a North-South arrow. The compass can also be set to track a certain bearing, which helps you follow a chosen direction. Meanwhile, the unit’s declination adjustment function allows you to correct the difference between true North and magnetic North.

In addition to the variety of outdoor functions, the X-Lander also displays normal time, with such add-ons as three daily alarms, a calendar programmed to the year 2089, a stopwatch with split-time measurement, and a countdown timer. Other features include a durable negative LCD display, a user-replaceable battery, and water-resistance to 100 feet. The X-Lander is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

What’s in the Box?
X-Lander wrist-top computer, battery, user’s manual.

4 Stars Great Compass Watch, So Far!
I purchased the X-Lander Military version of this watch (all black, rubber strap). I’ve scraped it across several hard objects, and it has yet to show scratches. I love the compass and reverse display. You have to be careful when setting up the watch, as it is easy to change the factory defaults on the barometer. The elevation data seems to change constantly with barometric pressure, but I’m assuming that this is always the case with this type of instrument as its not tied to GPS. My chief complaint is that the buckle is hard to unfasten (acutally, the tab that holds the end of the strap in place).

5 Stars Suunto Military X-Lander
The Mil X-Lander is one impressive piece of equipment. It is a an ABC watch that is built to withstand some pretty harsh environments. The watch wears large on the wrist, but it is perfectly at home on the trail as it is in the office. I do a lot of bushwalking and mountain biking and the barometer and compass are easy to set and use and the alti is very accurate. I would recommend this to anyone who is out in the scrub or who just wants a bloody great watch for everyday use.

3 Stars Nice watch
it’s a nice watch but depending on the sun light you can’t see the numbers, also when your are in the shadows… everything else works as it says the catalog…

5 Stars all-doingwatch
Very well constructed watch. Recommended for anyone in the military or who enjoys outdoor activities.

1 Star Buy a Casio….
I hope my experience with this particular watch is the exception, but I found absolutely nothing ‘military’ grade about this watch: The band broke after a few months of VERY light use, and Suunto does not offer a similar band as a replacement, but rather a generic band, taking away quite a bit from the watch’s overall appearance. A few months after the band broke, the compass stopped functioning; I’m not sure how sitting on my desk caused the compass to stop working correctly, but there you have it. I have spoken to other Suunto owners who have had the same issue with the compass function.

I have owned Casio Pathfinder watches in the past, and they have been FAR superior in regards to both longevity, reliability, and ease of use. My last one survived 5 yrs of hard use (scuba diving, surfing, mountains and deserts…) before giving up the ghost. And it cost about half of what the Suunto cost me. I thought I would try a different brand, but the Suunto survived less than a year of light/no use, no submersion or impacts. I have used Suunto products in the past (compasses) with no problems, but I would not buy another watch from this manufacturer. Hope this helps.

5 Stars Great multi-use tool
This is my second watch - lost the first after 4 years - and never hesitated about repurchasing the same exact watch. It is complex in its functionality, but simple to use. My primary use in tracking vertical gain/descent in biking and skiing allows me to accurate view my results with amazing accuracy - often times more accurate than GPS units. The compass is accurate, but not always operable based on your location. Durability is exceptional - my original was dropped, skied over once, and smacked on rocks and trees to many times to count. Excellent time piece for the outdoor adventurer.

4 Stars Durable watch with lots of options
I have had this watch for over 3 years and the only problem I have found is the compass has to be frequently recalibrated. I have had issues with some batteries messing the calibration up. When I try to use the compass while walking in a circle it reads from 95 degrees to 243 then jumps back to 95 degrees.

I have owned numerous watches over the years but this is by far my most favorite, regardless of the compass issue.

The only thing I would change is you can only monitor the barometric pressure or the altitude. It would be nice to monitor both, though not sure if this is feasible due to the watch using pressure to monitor both. This was difficult to keep up with while over seas (the resources to obtain the barometric pressure aren’t as readily available as they are here).

5 Stars Takes a lickin and i ain’t bullsittin’
outdoor oriented lad, grew tired of purchasing thirty dollar timex watch only to fall apart in three months. purchased this watch upon its inception around year 2001 or so. great watch, puts up with my inability to tender gently while being worn. my only piece of advice-spend the extra bucks and purchase the stainless/titanium band. the elastomer band does not last and is nothing more than a futile effort to stay affixed to wrist. great customer service, excellent & accurate features, and rarely do i endorse items but this one warrants lavish praise.

5 Stars great watch!!!

This is my second Suunto watch, Everything is as I expected. This time I bought the watch with the metal case; smaller than the previous watch, but the numbers are large enough to see at night with the back light with out my glasses. All in all; I am very pleased with my choice and the product. ub

5 Stars Best watch I have ever used
I love this watch. It is sturdy, beautiful, easy to read, built like a tank and very durable. It is about the right size, unlike some other Suunto watches that resemble dinner plates. The compass is as good as the one in my plane. My only criticism is that the sound of the alarm is so faint that it will not wake me up. If a wakeup alarm is a big priority do not buy this watch or you will be disappointed. The faint alarm is a problem that is a compromise related to the high quality of the case. I am on a multi-decade search for the perfect watch, but this one beats everything so far including my Rolex Explorer.

Suunto Yachtsman Wrist Top Computer Watch with Barometer and Compass

Suunto Yachtsman Wrist Top Computer Watch with Barometer and Compass

Don’t forget your life jacket or your Suunto Yachtsman next time you go sailing. This watch combines time and date functions with a barometer, compass, and sailing timer. The tough Yachtsman looks like a high-end wristwatch with a brushed aluminum case and mineral glass face. The body is black with a ring of silver around the dial and an oversized, backlit LCD screen.

The watch displays day, time, and date with three programmable alarms plus a stopwatch and countdown timer. But the Yachtsman really stands out in its combination of sailing timer, barometer, and compass functions. The sailing timer allows you to easily set the correct sequence and synchronize the timer with the race committee with the push of a button. Large numerals and audible warning signals let you concentrate more on maneuvering your boat in the swarming of the start while Suunto Yachtsman keeps you informed on up-coming critical moments. The race timer range of the stopwatch is 120 hours, and it features a countdown from 60 minutes. You can store 50 split times in the memory for later analysis.

The barometer allows you to measure the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, absolute pressure, and a difference measurement to follow changes in barometric pressure and temperature. The automatic four-day memory keeps track of atmospheric pressure. Another feature is the adjustable sea-level pressure function.

The Yachtsman’s compass shows directional bearing in degrees and cardinal or half-cardinal point. There is a north-south arrow and a bearing tracking function that displays locked bearing, actual bearing, and the difference between these declination adjustments. The compass’s bubble level indicates a level position to ensure accuracy within 2 or 3 degrees.

The Suunto Yachtsman is water resistant, tested to 100 meters/330 feet according to ISO 2281 standard, which means you can use it for swimming or other water sports activities–but it should not be used for scuba diving or freediving. The non-allergenic aluminum casing and the durable mineral crystal glass combined with a weatherproof band make it the ultimate tool for discerning boaters.

What’s in the Box This package includes the Suunto Yachtsman wrist-top computer and printed operating instructions. It is covered by a one-year warranty.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Owned three, never will I own a 4th
I can’t tell you how frustrated I am with this Yachtsman watch. I sail over 10,000 miles per year on average and really need to have a watch with the features that this Yachtsman provides. However, I cannot afford to keep replacing watches and bands.

I have owned THREE Yachtsman’s. One of these was a warranty replacement. I have four sailing friends who also bought Yachtsman because I owned one. Would you believe that all of us have had problems with this crappy watch?

My third watch is now dead due to water leakage. Prior to that I have had the following problems with Yachtsman watches:

* Multiple wrist band failures

* Sticky buttons

* LCD backlight out

* Display turned black in sun light

* Resetting by itself

* Foggy display

* Poor customer service

I have purchased two Sunntos and I PROMISE YOU there will not be a third.

4 Stars Good Buy but be prepared!
This is a really good watch. The features are pretty handy - barometer, temperature, can store readings, etc.

The only concern is regarding the size of the watch. I gave it to my boyfriend for Christmas and that was the key thing he mentioned - it is really big. So I recommend seeing it beforehand.

So if you can live with the size, it’s a good buy.

4 Stars Gentleman’s Plastic Watch
I like this watch a lot. Picked this up in order to give my Omega Seamaster a break (needs to be sent back to switzerland to get polished up). This watch is big, but very, very light. At the store where I picked mine up, I had the Seamaster in one hand and the Yachtsman in the other. The Yachtsman has probably twice the mass, but less than half the weight. It is good looking, and will be a conversation piece when worn with a suit at business meetings.

The good: Time, stopwatch, barometer, thermometer, compass, and race timer. The race timer is essentially a countdown (you synchronize with race committee gunshots) followed by a stopwatch, with split time viewing and one-race memory. A couple good features: it can only be stopped by hitting the stop button twice in two seconds - good for those of you that wear sailing gloves. Beeps are audible unless the wind is howling above 20 knots. If you aren’t a racer, you might do just as well with the x-lander, which excludes the racing timer but includes an altimeter, all within the same aesthetic package. The barometer includes a 1 hour interval memory (remember, 3 mbar change in under an hour and you’re probably in trouble) and a thermometer. All units can be changed between imperial and metric. I haven’t changed the battery yet but the compartment is opened with a coin, and looks very easy. Also, its a great looking watch if you can pull off the large size, and its relatively inexpensive.

The bad: The contrast could be a little darker, and the backlight could be a little brighter. No seconds display on the standard time view. You can toggle seconds display briefly via pushing a button. Reading the manual (twice or three times) is an absolute must, because the buttons are unmarked. The thermometer doesn’t take accurate readings while strapped on due to the heat from your wrist. The compass reading is a little jumpy (though in my experience, accurate). Lastly, I already knicked the aluminum bezel reaching into a closet… when I’m rolling around on the foredeck and trimming sails, its probably going to get pretty beat up.

Overall, good product. Well done Suunto.

2 Stars Disappointment
This watch was a disappointment for what you pay for it. It is hard to read at an angle, the countdown timer you would use to start a race is difficult to use and nearly inaudible. The concept behind this watch is neat, it looks nice, but Suunto should update this product and stop selling this particular watch. For a simpler, more user friendly Suunto sailing watch I recommend the M3.

5 Stars Excellent Regatta Watch
I have been looking for quite some time at different sailing watches. As a bowman, I compete quite heavily in sailing regatta’s and have tried several different watches. I have now had this watch for a few months and I must admit it is the best watch I have ever used. It is very user friendly and has an excellent countdown timer. Having the temperature and pressure is nice, but okay… they are extras. It is a nice looking watch, good display, and very easy to use. I would highly recommend this watch for anyone who truly competes in sailing regatta’s.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Good Product
I was impressed with the display. It is very easy to read in all light conditions.

4 Stars Great Watch
This is a great watch, especially for small to medium build guys. It’s a good size watch but it’s not nearly the dinner plate replacement that some of it’s ABC brethren are.

2 Stars Nice case, inacceptable band
I’ve used this watch for 4 years now and I like the case very much. But the band, either Titanium or SS ( practically the same ) is definitely unacceptable. I’ve changed it 3 times and lost a watch to it.

Other annoyances :

+ Watch is not full SS or Titanium.

+ Alarm is inaudible

2 Stars Band is not Ti
Caveat emptor. The band is mostly resin with some Ti shards. Alarm is inaudible. Otherwise a good timepiece.

2 Stars Great Watch, Terrible Strap
To summarize, this is a great watch, saddled with a bad and expensive strap design.

As a watch, the design is quite good - it is sturdy and very feature rich. There are a few minor shortcomings, however.

- The user interface is poorly designed. Some of the features will be completely inaccessible to you unless you have a photographic memory or have the manual in your hands.

- The thermometer is on your wrist. This makes it an inaccurate reference for determining the existing ambient temperature, or your body temperature. To get an accurate reading of the ambient temperature, it’s best to remove the watch, and let it sit for a while.

- A lack of a count-down timer. (However, there is an alarm)

- Very quiet alarm, inaudible in louder settings.

The truly disappointing component of this watch is the bad strap design.

- It costs $120 to replace (1/3rd the price of the whole watch!) After scouring the Internet and Ebay, I was completely unable to a significantly better price on the strap.

- It is an integrated strap, so it can only be replaced Suunto Observer strap, not a generic watch strap.

- The watch bracelet is not a full metal bracelet - it is only a rubber strap with metal inserts for looks only. I personally don’t mind this, but some people dislike it.

- The only way to size the bracelet to your wrist is to cut it with a pair of scissors! If you make a mistake cutting your strap, it will cost you $120. This also means that you cannot loan the watch to anyone who does not have the exact same wrist size as you. I have never seen this kind of design before in another watch.

- The rubber/elastomer part of the bracelet is a particularly cheap material. The forums are full of complaints of strap failure. Depending on your wear level, the strap will fail after a few years. Suunto refuses to sell the elastomer part of the bracelet separately, even if you speak to customer service. Instead, they will insist you need to purchase a new strap kit for $120. This is ridiculous for a part that costs pennies to manufacture.

Realize that you will be paying $120 every few years for as long as you wear this watch.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Excellent Watch, EASY INTERFACE. AWESOME…
I love this thing. It would be hard to live without. All the features work exactly as described. Instructions are simple and clear. Great product.

2 Stars If you think it’s a tough watch, think again
I wear my X6HR in a regular environment (office, home), nothing near extreme condition. However, in less than a year, I foung the rubber band of the heart monitor is broken in many placed and the rubber became brittle with many hairline cracks. This is clearly a quality issue with the material used for the watch. In a trip to the Keys, FL, I found that the little rubber ring that holds the band of the watch in place broke in two piece much like what happed to the heart rate monitor band. The band itself also has many small cracks. I am sure the band will break in half sooner or later. The LCD on the watch also became fuzzy when I wear it around beaches. This is supposed to be a watch that you can bring to an expedition, yet it failed miserably in a everyday environment. If you are looking for a tough watch, look elsewhere. My Casio G-shock never gives me any headache that this watch gives.

5 Stars Everything I wanted and a lot more
The watch delivers everything you want from a HR monitor + outdoor adventures and is very simple to operate.

3 Stars Great features, but needs serious polish.
The X6HR has a great range of functions. However, the user interface and reliability of the product need serious work before its steep pricetag can be justified.

- Bezel buttons give no positive feedback, so you need to look closely at the screen to confirm button presses.

- The HRM function seems both unreliable. Heart rate occasionally drops out or spikes to double for no reason. I’ve parallel tested with a $30 HRM, which seems more reliable.

- The compass function is unbelievably poorly designed. Instead of drawing a compass on the face, or indicating N/S/E/W points around the bezel, the watch tells you the number of degrees you are facing, or prints N, NW, W, SE, etc on the screen. This is a completely counterintuitive way of displaying the information.

- The PC connection software looks like it was written in the 1990s- provides little functionality and poor usability.

This watch had great promise… but it has proven very disappointing in design.

3 Stars nice hiking companion
This is a nice hiking companion but it is not a training tool. You do not have any information regarding calorie or TE after the exercise. For training go to T6, T4 or T3. For hiking with PC cabality this is a good option. The Polar S625 can do a better work for hiking with additional trainign capabilities.
