5 Stars Great product for navigating through a strange city
I used this wrist compass successfully on a recent tour of Scandinavia, and it helped me find my way several times. It has the very nice feature of settling down quickly to a specific orientation. It’s also a bargain.

5 Stars Great “Plan C”
This is my opinion only; not an endorsement by the military or any other organization. Recently I returned back from a tour in Iraq and I found this little tool to be instrumental. When talking on the radio and figuring where everyone else is located, you use cardinal directions (eg North side of the road, etc.). Sure you can use a GPS, but why spend the time when you just need to know where North is. Some would suggest a cheap five dollar watch add-on. I disagree, during a map reading / land navigation exercise, my primary compass cracked and fell back on my Suunto M9 to finish it out. I have developed a brand preference for Suunto based on the M9 and the MC-2G. The Good is fast accurate acquisition for North. It is small and often you forget about it until you need it. Also, it is easy to hide under a long sleeve shirt. The Bad is that the needle sticks because it is not a global compass (unlike the MC-2G). I would not use it for hiking anything but well used and familiar trails. The Ugly is it has a cheap nylon strap, great for hikers and backpackers, terrible for occasions you are going to be dressed up in areas of the city you are unfamiliar. The Sunnto M9 makes a great “plan C”, behind a GPS, a Good map and compass.

4 Stars Good compass for the city
I bought this so that I could easily figure out which way is north after I get off the subway. It really comes in handy. The compass isn’t really steady all the time, it tends to sway a little, but so far is has reliably pointed me in the right direction each time I hold it level and steady. The only thing is that the strap is like a cheap velcro material with a plastic buckle. It works fine, I just expected something a little nicer based on the price and from looking at the picture. For some reason too, the compass arrived seperated from the strap and it was pretty annoying to figure out how to put it on at first, and there were no directions to explain how to do it. The material that came with it that explains how to read a compass (& map) was pretty informative and useful though.

5 Stars Best Bang for Buck Compass out there …
If you need a compass, bigger is best, but just how big can big be? Reason is, the aiming accuracy and capability gets better if you have a large stable platform and sight. OTAH, getting a wrist compass to do the same thing is difficult to achieve, and the M-9 meets this role well. With GPS being the principle guide these days to terrestrial navigation, compasses are mostly for backup and rough heading use, so best accuracy is less practical these days in lieu of compactness, ruggedness, and light weight. Underwater, the M-9 is as good as a dedicated SCUBA compass.

I’ve used an M-9 since 2001, and it finally died, the plastic case cracked, some liquid leaked, so a bubble that formed keeps the pointer from spinning freely.

This is my 3rd M-9, as I’ve bought two, keeping one as a spare. I use them both on surface and underwater to as deep as 260′ … although not rated as a diving compass, all fluid filled devices are non-compressible and should take great depths without issue. Diving capacity has been proven for the years I’ve owned this compass and others who use it similarly.

Pros

Very free spinning and accurate

Light weight

Rotating degree bezel

sighting capacity

transparent case, easy to check for defects

Usable underwater to depths at least to 260′

Velcro strap binds very well underwater

Cons

If not leveled during sighting, pointer will lock [fix: flick it with your finger, and a proper direction will not change much with movement]

Plastic case, will not last forever

Summary:

I’ve seen a number of compasses for field use in the middle of nowhere, and for so simple a device, its amazing so many are unreliable [whatever magnets they use don't hold its magnetism permanently], inaccurate markings, or poor construction. If you get lost because your compass doesn’t work when you need it, its not worth any amount of money.

Suunto has made a name for itself in compasses, and what seems cheap looking is very well engineered, yet simple.

If you need a compass for general use, the watch mounted Clipper works best. I use those underwater too to 260′, to backup the M-9.

4 Stars Inexpensive beginners compass
I received this compass as part of an introductory Orienteering class. It was good for learning the basics of using a map, finding North, and shooting a bearing. It was NOT very good for sighting distant objects, so I gave it to my son and purchased a better compass with a mirrored top and sighting slot. Ok for what it is, but for a little more you can get better features.

4 Stars Excellent Lightweight Compass
This is an excellent compass for the money. It reads well, fits nicely in the pocket and has adjustable dial.

5 Stars The backpackers’ compass…
If you are a light-weight backpacker and need a compass then this is a good one. However, you can use your watch as a compass, so…

5 Stars Terrific Tarp
Great design&liteweight make this tarp perfect for solo trekkers who need a sturdy&lrg sq ft. The Nite Ize cord clips work great,I even bought an extra set.Just be sure to always keep the tarp well secured to prevent leaks from pooled water, and exessive flapping which can lead to damage and a wet nite in the wilds!

4 Stars Nice tarp for ultralight backpackers; Not so spacious, though
Got this tarp for my 30th birthday and took it out the next weekend to use for an overnighter on the Uwharrie Trail. For a single person overnight, this tarp is awesome. With four stakes, four guy ropes, and no poles, this thing weighs next to nothing and fits anywhere in or on my backpack. I didn’t set it up as pictured; instead, I staked three corners to the ground to form a triangle, and used my trek pole to hold up the fourth corner. This worked well because I oriented the sides staked to the ground so that the open end was out of the wind. There are numerous guy points all over the tarp. Since I had only used one rope for the initial setup, I attached two more along the middle axis of the tarp and then tied them to a tree to give me a little more space inside.

A word to the wise, though: Kelty has some illustrations showing how you can fit a BUNCH of people under this tarp. I tried setting the tarp up several different ways in my back yard, and I think that more than two people might feel a little crowded with any configuration.

4 Stars MSR Titan Kettle
The MSR Titan Kettle works well. I am pleased with its durability, weight, and packability. The only downside is that the lid fits very snugly, so you need two hands to remove it. Then again, that probably contributes to its packability.

4 Stars A great little pot for backpackers
The MSR Titan kettle is exactly the right size for a double-size freeze-dried meal, a couple of packs of ramen, a Lipton’s meal, or enough hot water to make a single meal and have a hot beverage. There’s an indentation on the bottom that keeps it stable on a cat food or soda can alcohol stove. The lid fits snugly so it doesn’t fall off and it might even save you from losing your dinner if you knock it over. It will hold the stove and a windscreen when packing it up, plus your lighter and a spoon. There’s spout is very handy and the handles fold against the body. It’s lightweight, too.

There are three drawbacks: the high price, it’s a hard to clean when making meals with creamy sauces as they tend to stick, and the handles get hot so you have to either let them cool or use a bandana.

Overall it’s probably the best little backpacking pot there is if you can spare the bucks.

3 Stars The Dribbles
It’s great quality like most MSR I would have liked it to hold a few more ounces. If you boil a full pot there is no way to start pouring without dribbling some till the water level is lower! Best to fill 3/4 full or beware of some really hot water where you might not want it.

5 Stars All a backpacker needs
I’ve used my MSR Titan kettle for backpacking for years now. It’s ideally suited for use with alcohol and Esbit stoves. It boils enough water for freezer bag cooking with left over to make tea which I drink directly from the kettle, using it as a mug. I have a cozy made of Reflectix which goes around the kettle to keep the tea warm on cold, windy days. Stove, stand, lighter and windscreen fit into the kettle when in my pack.

5 Stars Good for Boiling
This little kettle is great for boiling or using as a cup or bowl. The lid fits tight to help speed boiling, and has a hole to release steam. The handles on the side fold against the side of the assemble for storage. Don’t be surprised by the units small size. Intended for backpacking
